England players and selection discussion thread

Once again it's worth repeating they didn't have to force Anderson to retire at all. They could have told him the consequence of continuing his career and that selection is not guaranteed and that would be fair. There have been a few times they could've used Anderson before the next ashes and this series v India particularly stands out.
Yep nail on the head.

Jimmy showed no decline in a decade, one bad Ashes series apart. His speed never declined, his accuracy and smarts as strong as ever. Especially with Broad going and Woakes ineffective abroad, there was no need to retire him.

Pains me to say it but Woakes looks like his race is run. Struggled to keep his pace over 80mph and wasn't moving it off the straight.

Carse looked like he was bowling on one foot half the time and Tongue can't make a career out of bowling at tailenders.

If Atkinson is within shouting distance of fitness he has to play, so he presumably comes in for Woakes.

Jofra for Carse and maybe Potts or (my shout) Mahmood for Tongue?

Hull and the Overtons will probably be discussed and if things are deemed sufficiently dire maybe even Robbo the racist.

And there's a lad up at Lancs with something about him. Jimmy something...?

It has taken over a year but not having Broad and Anderson has suddenly really hit me. Think I took Atkinson a bit for granted last season.

I think Woakes is probably first for the chopping block, his bowling has been quite innocuous and his batting has declined too (Atkinson, Carse and Jof could all come in and do a better job at 8), my worry is that apart from Potts (who doesn't seem favoured at the moment and who in truth probably lacks that X-Factor at Test level), and Cook (who looked very innocuous against Zimbabwe), none of the alternatives seem like the kind of bowlers who can replicate Woakes' workload. Archer is a definite no, he's best used for short, sharp spells of fire, Atkinson bowled a lot in his first year in Test cricket and has suffered injuries and his pace has slowed right down, and Overton they probably want to use for short, sharp spells too. Mahmood is a gun in white ball cricket but a Test recall looks out of the picture right now, and Hull shouldn't be back in contention yet, even if he is getting better

Well I'm delighted Atkinson is back, he has to play. I presume Archer will too even though I don't think he should. Carse looks injured, Tongue and Woakes innocuous and Bashir is just not good enough.

Don’t think we’ll make any changes to the batting, reckon it’s Atkinson for Woakes and Archer for Carse. Wouldn’t complain if Tongue is taken out neither

I'm not ready for Woakes to be done. 🥺

If Atkinson and Carse are fully fit then both should play but dunno if either will be. Cook/Potts into the reckoning otherwise?

Woakes has to play at Lords. Averages 61 with the bat and 11 with the ball over 5 matches.
If he fails there then even RIS has no counter argument.

At this early stage I'm tentatively picking England's Ashes pace men from this group: Archer, Wood, Stone, Robinson, Woakes, Stokes, Carse, Tongue, Atkinson and Potts. The first 7 mentioned are 30+ years old (Carse will be later this month) and should be motivated to tour before time gets them.

Guessing they'll pick at least 7 and thinking they should be Archer, Wood, Robinson, Stokes, Carse, Tongue and Atkinson. If they're not picking Robinson for reasons other than cricket then Woakes comes in.

Who would even come in to open if crawley got dropped? Know Tom Haines had a good start to the season and scored vs India-A. Other openers at the top of Div-1 right now are sibley, Hameed, Lyth and Lees. Those guys have been tried before, don't think there's anything that's magically changed in there game that will make them do any better than sibley.

Complete change of pace attack? Be amazed if they drop Bashir.
They should drop Bashir , it's not just the lack of wickets in the series , he can't seem to hold the game up and bowl economically , better off playing an extra batter that can bowl like a Bethell , or a spinner that can bat like a Liam Dawson/Rehan Ahmed

They would have to pick someone on potential like a Ben Mckinney
