England players and selection discussion thread

I see Tongue picked up an injury playing for England A. Might disrupt his chances for making the Test line-up.
Shame for him but I would like to see Cook get another shot as one test isn't enough to judge. If Woakes plays they may not want another bang-on 80 bowler though.

After Anderson's retirement the ECB has chosen 9 fast bowlers to give them more game time for the Ashes

1 Atkinson (11)
2 Woakes (9)
3 Carse (6)
4 Potts (4)
5 Wood (3)
6 Stone (2)
7 Hull (1)
8 Tongue (2)
9 Cook (1)

Probable six for the Ashes 1 Wood, 2 Archer, 3 Carse, 4 Atkinson, 5 Stokes, 6 Tongue.

Cook was averaging less than that overall, including his faster opening spell tbf
Has to be said that Woakes has looked really innocuous in this current game. A bit of context is that he's barely played this season, but even so that's worrying that a) he's not got back to the general low 80s where he's been most effective and b) has been down at mid 70s and batters get down the track all too quickly too him.

Personally I thought both Woakes and Carse bowled really well this morning and were very unlucky to only pick up one wicket. But I didn't see the rest of the day so no idea how well they did in subsequent spells.

I will admit I didn't get to see yesterday's play. What I did see is that Carse bowled pretty well on Friday evening and I was even impressed with Bashir's role where his ability to get drop on the ball did help create some uncertainty for the batters. However, when I had watched Woakes and Tongue earlier in the game, I had to say that there were a few alarm bells ringing. The latter doesn't look anywhere consistent enough for me, regardless of him knocking over the tail.

As I said with Woakes, it may well be match fitness is an issue and I would have thought he would definitely play the next test if fit. However, I would have thought one seamers slot is up for grabs if Atkinson is fit.

Woakes is that age when one starts to wonder whether he's on the way out. I would hesitate to jetison him from a home series on the back of one ineffective game, but he needs to be better next time.

I was partially thinking about the age factor, but I think you still need to factor in his experience, at least for a couple of games given the inexperienced players in the attack.

That would probably be my preference too. But if he continues not to pose a threat, there's not a lot to lose by playing the three less experienced guys. Especially if Stokes is able to bowl as much as we've seen here.

It is only one home game of him not being a threat though. He’s credit enough in the bank for a lot more than that

Yeah, I'm just pondering out loud really. The other factor is that the wicket at Leeds was a complete road, so I'd expect Woakes to be more threatening at our other grounds anyway. To state the obvious, I'd definitely pick him for the 2nd test and probably the third as well. Beyond that, who knows. I do think we need our opening bowlers to do more than not go for many.

Woakes has been injured, is old and with Atkinson out anyway is not going to get dropped. We may revisit this later in the summer if he doesn't improve but I think he possibly goes after the ashes/early next summer.

I'd be surprised if they take Woakes to oz given their obsession with pace over accuracy, but he bowled very well in the 2nd innings repeatedly beating the batters but not getting an edge. However if Stokes has to bowl 35 overs in every match this summer, he'll probably be worn out by August ;) But they will probably rotate Carse/Tongue with Atkinson when hes fit again, and/or Archer since they want to get him back before the ashes, assuming Wood is out of action all summer.
