How come people become free agents straight away? Hasn't in past seasons there been a contract thread where teams get the opportunity to sign their out of contract players first and then they become free agents?
Doesn't make a difference wither way, I'd imagine. Basically, though, as the player has a choice (well, assuming more than one club will want them...), it doesn't matter who has "first dibs" as they can easily just say no anyway. Likewise, if there are no "first dibs", the club can still sign the player.

I do agree with the sentiments behind what you're saying, though. With this in mind, I think clubs should do more to keep their players contracted.
