Daren Ganga?

why is Darren Ganga on West Indies team? He has played nearly 50 tests yet still averages just around 25. Is he a relative of some selector in the West Indies team? I simply dont understand why is he given so many chances.

I've spoken to club/domestic cricketers from the WI, and without naming names... the word 'politics' has been dropped a few times.

In before the PEWS rage.

I know very little about WI domestic cricket, but I'm assuming that there aren't any suitable replacements for him?

Bingo. We've seen Parchment. He's the sort of altenative they can come up with. Ganga outscores all comers in domestic cricket and has the technique to succeed in tests, even though he rarely does. I'm yet to be convinced there's a better option, though, even if he does only average 25.

Its a sad state of affairs that he may be there on merit. Though after 50 Tests and approaching 30, Id be running out of patience.

There just isnt much to replace him with.

Career stats for players that have played in the last 2 years. Given that Lara has gone, there is only 1 player that averages over 40. Thats a pretty depresing state of afairs and explains why a 'failure' like Ganga is still there.

Surely that West Indian all-rounder who plays for Durham could do better than Darren Ganga?

In fact, bring back Desmond Haynes. Even having not played for 20 odd years, I'm sure he could do as good a job as old Dazza.

He dominants domestically, and is the best of an incredibly poor bunch. He is being played out of position though.

What happened to that Aussie bat with a Jamaican father who'd gone to qualify for the Windies? Is that the Nash J90 refers to?

Anyroad, with Ganga I guess it's what others have alluded too: paucity of options & a very attractive looking technique. Rather like Ramprakash when he played tests, Ganga looks like he should be scoring more because he looks so fluent.

What about Wavell and Ryan Hinds?
Neither of them are openers either. Always thought both looked decent bats at three and six respectively, but Wavell is getting on a bit these days and Ryan seems to have disappeared.

Interesting to hear about Ganga not being an opener, mind - I'd never seen him bat anywhere else, for any team. You have to feel for him - wonder what he'd do if given a go in the middle-order.

How about Devon Smith as an option? Wavell Hinds, it seems, was a one-series or two-series wonder, but looked a lot better at that position, although because he was a better power-player than Ganga.
