Daren Ganga?

I remember his first tour of South Africa, the Windies were thrashed in every Test and studio guest Deryk Murray said he was a promising youngster but hoped they wouldn't ruin him by using him as an opener.

Devon Smith is in serious danger of becoming the next Daren Ganga.
Very much so. He has all the tools to succeed and was/is a prolific scorer at domestic level and particuarly Under 19s level, yet he simply doesn't score many runs very often in test or ODI cricket.

At least Devon Smith actually considers himself an opener and prefers to bat there, though. As much as I think this factor is slightly overplayed by some people, it obviously helps.

Bingo. We've seen Parchment. He's the sort of altenative they can come up with. Ganga outscores all comers in domestic cricket and has the technique to succeed in tests, even though he rarely does. I'm yet to be convinced there's a better option, though, even if he does only average 25.

He has a nice record for T&T but not anything that screams 'special'

Well, it depends - his first three seasons (for Windward Islands :p) weren't too flash, but given that he was just 17 in the first that's not really too surprising. Since the 2002 season, however, he's averaged almost 50. His record in the same timeframe for West Indies A and West Indies teams on tour is good (though not as good as his Busta Cup record), too.

Since reaching a decent age (21) to be playing reprisentative cricket, he's done pretty damn well. And so he should - as Rob said, he's technically pretty good, he's a specialist opener (has opened at every level of cricket he's ever played IIRR), and he always looked really good in u19 cricket (there was much mention of him when WI u19 toured here in 2001, myself included in the group doing so, as he was an obvious standout).

It's just, like Ramprakash, Ganga, Blewett and a few others, he's always found ways to get out at the Test level. Not like he's been worked-out; he just doesn't seem to be able to concentrate for long periods the way he clearly can and does at domestic (and did at u19) level.

EDIT: seems you were talking about Ganga, not Devon Smith. Oh well, point stands. :p

Without having researched properly, if you compare Ganga's record to the other possible West Indian openeres, he'll look pretty impressive.

I don't understand how anyone can justify this guy's performance. Even if he is the second best opener in the West Indies, for a case of such as his where hes been so dire for so long you'd think they would bring in a middle order bat up the order, maybe one of the Hinds. But no, they continue to persist with a guy with an average even a Zimbabwean batsman wouldn't be proud of.

And jeapardise the precious chances of a middle-order batsman doing well in, y'know, the middle-order?

Ganga is a middle-order batsman anyway.

Theres no chance of jeopardizing anything if the middle order batsman in question isn't even in the team, as is the case with Wavell Hinds. Obviously hes just an example, and any sufficiently talented middle order batsman should get the gig ahead of Ganga imo because hes a proven failure opening and theres no room for him in the middle order.

Well, you see, I honestly do wonder whether Wavell Hinds' career has been jeopardised by the fact he got pushed up to open in 2000\01, and has done virtually nothing else since. Camps said the same thing, FTR: on a small handful of occasions he's batted at five or six, and actually looked really rather good. I really, really wish he'd had more chances to do that. Sadly, it's pretty much too late now (IIRR he's about 32 now).

There was a young fella called Xavier Marshall that was brought out on a tour of Australia a while ago. What ever happened to him?

Yes he was picked very early for the One-Day side and looked out of his depth. Likes to play his shots and has started pretty well for Jamaica in the Carib Beer Series this year, think he's got a couple of fifties in the first 3 games.

I can't beleive how short they are running on good batsmen and also bowlers to an extent.

Got dropped the season before too for poor performance and attitude.
