I was recently reading a book - Famous Cricketing Families. The book details the records of a number of famous families. Which family do you think has the best cricketers?

LOL @ Khans. That's such rubbish, Khans make up a large part of the Muslim cricketers and they're not all family. Which family are you referring to? Nevertheless, I'd say Pollocks for producing two contenders for an all-time XI.

With the Khans I am talking about Imran, Majid, Javed Burki, Jahangir and Baqa Jilani.

In test cricket the Pollock's have scored over 5000 runs. This would have been a figure closer to around 12,000, had it not been for South Africa's ban. The Pollock's have also taken around 500 wickets and could have been closer to 650. They have also taken almost 100 catches.

At least one Mohammed brother played in 100 of Pakistan's first 101 matches!!!

From the list the Pollocks

But I would have chosen the Headleys.

Grandfather, father and son all test cricketers. 2 nations represented, batsmen and bowler.

The genes run strong in that clan.

I voted the Chappells, in which I have included the Grandfather Vic Richardson

That gives them four Test players and three Aussie captains, 14,000+ Test runs and 200+ catches. Throw in a few wickets and that is not to bad an effort.

Dave Mohammed doesn't have any family that's played first class cricket. How did they get on there?

I voted the Flowers, because I think their contribution to cricket was the most important.

Well, it COULD have been the most important.

The Flowers, of course. Maybe Andy's son Sam Flower will one day be a test cricketer, hopefully for Zim, but more likely England.

The Mohammads of Pakistan are a great cricketing family.

All five brothers Hanif, Mushtaq, Sadiq, Raees and one other I dont recall played first class cricket. The first three played for Pakistan. Hanif is a legend scoring 12 centuries in his 55 tests including 337 against Windies. This was and is the longest test innings ever breaking Huttons record. He then went on to break Don Bradmans first class cricket record of 452 no with a then world record 499.

Mushtaq, a fine all rounder, became the youngest to play test cricket and went on to lead Pakistan with distinction.

In the next generation, I only know of Shoaib (Hanif's son) who also opened for Pakistan and averaged in the 40's with 7 hundreds including a double.

Even the Khans of Pakistan are a great cricketing family as someone has already mentioned.

Yes the fifth brother was Wazir Mohammad (the eldest) who also played for Pakistan and scored two test centuries.

There cant be many instances of four brothers having scored test centuries. Add a nephew and its pretty impressive.

Cricket does seem to be something of a dynastic sport, makes me wonder about the whole nature/nurture arguement.

English cricketing families seem a bit under-represented, so to redress the balance:

The Graveneys: Tom, brother Ken (Gloucestshire captain) & nephew David (also ex-Glous skip & current chairman of our selectors).

The Huttons: Sir Len, son Richard (also English test player), grandson Ben (Middlesex)

The Stewarts: Micky & son Alec

The Butchers: Alan, brother Ian (Gloucestershire), sons Mark & Gary (ex-Glamorgan & Surrey)

The Cowdreys: Colin & sons Chris (also England test captain) & Graham (Kent)

The Comptons: Denis, brother Leslie (Middlesex & Arsenal :) ) & grandson Nick (Middlesex)

The Sidebottoms: Arnie & son Ryan (uniquely dad & junior are both one cap wonders!).

In my experience, cricket is definately a dynastic sport. I come from a minor Essex cricketing dynasty, and I know most, if not all, of my club side in Devon had parents or grandparents that played, mostly in Devon. I think that cricket fans are born. If you spend hours as a kid around cricket with your family, you are bound to associate it with good things, regardless of your own ability. With regard to ability, it is certainly genetic, with good coordination, reflexes and eyes being inherited characteristics. Unfortunately for me, I inherited all of the (nurtured) love of cricket and none of the (natural) ability!

I also think that you are more likely to enjoy cricket if you come from a non-cricketing family if you went to public school, because they have the (compulsory?) opportunity to play, away from the club system, which tends to be a familial thing.

*Ahem*

Baqa Jilani
Jahangir Khan
Majid Khan
Javed Burki
Imran Khan
Bazid Khan

I dont think there is any other family that has produced more cricketers then the above. Theren there are these :-

Amarnath family - Lala, Mohinder and Surinder.
Mankad - Vinoo and Ashoke
Manjrekar - Vijay and Sanjay
Gavaskar - Sunil and Rohan ;)
Singh - Yograj and Yuvraj
