Tim should be able to confirm this seeing as how he's related..............

I have a recollection that Mark Burgess Captained both the NZL Cricket & football (soccer) teams in the '70s............not sure if I saw him on Neil's list earlier........

The Essex fast bowler Ian Pont (Keith's Brother) had baseball trials, and apparently he was good but not quite good enough.

The lower the better, but the top professionals go well past scratch.

Even those not good enough to be professionals can go +1, +2 etc.
Scratch or better can try to qualify for The Open can't they, and the US Open IIRC. Probably why they're called "Open". What this has to do with anything, I don't know. I'm good at pointless posting me.. 8-)

Hansie Cronje - Rugby (junior provincial colours)
Darryl Cullinan - Rugby (junior provincial colours)
Gary Kirsten - tennis
Kepler Wessels - tennis
Errol Stewart - played rugby for Natal
Dave Callaghan - played rugby for Eastern Province
Mark Boucher - provincial squash player
Nantie Hayward - baseball
Jonty Rhodes - hockey (nearly made SA team for Atlanta olympics)
Thami Tsolekile - hockey
Herschelle Gibbs - soccer, rugby (when Gibbs was a schoolboy, it was said that he could play for SA in any of those three sports, lucky for us cricket fans he chose our game)
Jimmy Cook - played professional soccer
Doesn't suprise me that Gibbs excelled at other sports ....with those reflexes and hand-eye talents you'd think he'd be a more than useful soccer goalkeep

How about Langer?

A black belt in martial arts has to count for something (especially being his size and somebody wants to fight him behind the back of a pub).

And IIRC (Corey would know of course) that Lehmann played state league AFL/whatever it is called down there.

i have another one *****ES!

craig evans played for zimbabwe rugby

ervine MIGHHT have played for zim hockey

Protea

School Boy/Girl Captain
AB de Villiers played off a scratch handicap in golf, was selected to train at the Nick Botterelli tennis academy when he was twelve and played Craven Week rugby for the Blue Bulls. I think I read somewhere that he was also an accomplished swimmer.
Herschelle Gibbs was also a very good athlete and held a number of school records.
Mark Boucher played squash for South Africa.
Kevin Pietersen *ahem* represented Kwa-Zulu Natal in swimming.

Smudge

Hall of Fame Member
All Black great Don Clarke played for the Waikato Plunket Shield team regularly as a medium-fast bowler.
Another AB fullback, Allan Hewson, was a 'keeper for Wellington.

Sir Redman

State Vice-Captain
I don't know where else to put this but Hayden Shaw (Canterbury pace bowler) is giving cricket back up to play hockey again.

I thought it was a mistake for him to leave hockey in the first place...anyone who knows anything about hockey can tell you how good he is.
