Impressive. Especially for a hook. I know different batsmen could probably hook a ball further than they could drive it but if I was trying to hit the ball as far as I could it would end up over cow-corner. Over square leg, midwicket or long on would be the area where most of the biggest sixes are hit but which of those areas do ya reckon would have the world record longest hit if they were all measured (hypothetically)?

Probably long-on. Especially if I remember Victor Trumper's 6 smashing a window some 100 odd metres back.

I think Astle's innings deserved MOM. That game will always be remembered for that innings alone so it was the performance that had the most impact. Chasing 550 in the final innings to win and coming in at 119/3 to take the team from an absolutely hopeless position to one where there was a chance NZ could actually win at 451/9. He was batting with a specialist in Cairns for the last wicket and they only needed another 98 runs to win when he got out. And to do it in just 150 odd balls with 11 6s aprayed all over Jade Stadium. It was an innings in a lifetime and anyone who saw it will never forget it. Caddick, Hoggard and Hussain still have nightmares I'm sure.

I have already stated that I think the man of the match should be given to the player who produces the best individual performance regardless of whether his team wins and thats just my opinion. And in that particu;ar game I feel that astle produced the best individual performance and so for me was the man of the match.

Yes, only 98 runs. The way Astle and Cairns were batting it would have only taken about 1/2 an hour. Who's going to remember Hussain's innings anyway? Is Hussain going to release a DVD of that innings like Astle did? Hussain himself has said he was worried he would lose the game which was unthinkable/impossible before that innings.
It was a classic case of giving someone MOM just because they were on the winning side when there was a far superior effort in the losing cause

last year, before the boxing day test, i was at australia's net session.this year, the nets were in the middle of the ground next to the pitch that they used during the game. darren lehmann was bowling to brett lee, and lee has charged down the pitch and got it off the middle, and hit it into the 3rd tier at the MCG, about 8 rows back. most ridiculous thing i've ever seen in my life.

So did Astle's. Without him, NZ have just 229 runs. Astle made more runs, broke records and gave NZ a chance to win. He also picked up 3 wickets as well .

Davison hit a huge one at the World Cup 2003. Way, way out of the ground.

Was that off Oram? As I recall he hit 3 off Oram in one over. The last was a pull-shot over squarish mid-wicket that went out off the ground (admittedly it wasn't a big ground-the boundaries were probably bigger than at many NZ grounds, but the stands were smallish) while it was still on the way up. It was going at such a speed on the way out of the ground that it must have landed absolutely miles away.

graham thorpes 200 set up a test vicotry, surly that is better than astles 222. astle was just having fun, probally didnt really give a ****. thorpe was under pressure and well won them the game

maccas six was huge. nealry everyone i nkow, and heard people like oram and cairns say this to, thought it would have been impossible to hit it over the roof. not sure how many rows it is, maybe 40. and it starts 2 metres of the ground. then u got the coporate boxes and then the roof. dont nkow who said it was 106 metres, but it was a **** load bigger than that. personally i ahvent seen a bigger one on tv

I do for one, because I appreciate it took a lot more skill and had a much bigger bearing on the result.
