Who is the best vice captain someone who had captained on few instances but never held the job full time or for not a long period?

Marcus Trescothick, if the gushing Nass is to be believed - he's been waxing lyrical about him all day

International Captain
All things considered, it has to be Javed Miandad. Killed his own ego to follow his skipper whole heartedly, taught the youngsters to always play for the team, came up with excellent on field strategies, did the tough job of leading the sledging brigade... All the while batting and fielding magnificently. As an Indian, I totally hated his guts. But what he did for his team as Imran's deputy is invaluable.

Adam Gilchrist would have to be up there for his exploits on the 2004 Indian tour.
but he led australia in the first three tests himself... i am interpreting this question to be more specific... on deputies... not stand-in skippers....

Vice captain filling in is not really a regular occurrence. Geoff Boycott filled in for Mike Brearley and became the first England captain to lose to New Zealand. Allan Lamb filled in for three Tests and lost them all.

Plus he complemented Imran well. While Imran took care of the bowling, he guided the batting. While Imran was the charismatic leader, Miandad chipped in with his tactical acumen.
