This seems very close to my corrected list right now (after the discussions here of course) only that Mcgrath/Ambrose thing...I never could choose one, honestly...

I`m surprised there is not more love for Sangakarra here....
worth a point, I guess that has more to do with the time period than anything else, during that given time period, Gilchrist is an automatic choice as a wicketkeeper batsman, now can he be there only as a specialist batsman? choice is yours...

His career as a batsman flourished in the second half of 2000's and first half of 2010's, say from 2006 till the end...for me, he is a must when we are going to make the best of the decade of 2010's so to speak, be it as a wicketkeeper batsman or a specialist one....I don't care

Shoot me down all u want, but since when did teams need 5 proper bowlers. Sorry to beat a dead horse but neither of the two great teams of recent times had a great AR or a proper 5th bowler. I was always 6 batsmen, wk and 4 front line bowlers. Hopefully, one of the batsmen can turn their arms over a bit.

That largely depends on the batting line up IMO, I am on the contrary, a big fan of 5 batsmen, 1 genuine all rounder, wicket keeper batsman, and 4 bowlers (if 1 one of them can bat a bit, like Marshall, that's a bonus), if you can afford it of course, and I believe this team can...

Imran's average at no. 6 is 61.87
Knott's average at no. 7 is 41.00
Hadlee's average at 8 is 27.44

in fact Marshall has 1800+ runs at test level with an average of 18.85 coming at 9...

More than good enough for me

This is an ATG vs ATG scenario, there are bowlers on each side capable of ripping apart the top order on demand. 6 great batsman is a must, people are not even convinced that Sehwag and Hayden can hold their own, expecting Imran to hold 6 in addition to bowling is asking way too much of him.

Ok, fair enough, so what do u suggest, a specialist at 6 or someone like Kapil or Botham?

If Imran Khan averaged 54-61 batting at five or six, it would seem to suggest that his batting improved if you moved him up from his more familiar seventh position (ave 34.81). Besides, batting 5/6: 118, The Oval (1987); 109* v India, Karachi ('89); 136, Adelaide and 82* Sydney ('90); 73* v West Indies, Karachi ('90) - not minnow bashing by any means. I think the confusion lies in the curious chronological trajectory of Imran Khan's career during which he began a bowler with some useful runs and developed into an outright allrounder. His batting was superior towards the end of his career and consequentially he was obviously getting bumped up the order more often c. 1986 onward, although there exists four earlier matches on which Imran Khan batted at five or sixth (e.g. 1974 at The Oval).

1971-85, ave 31.12
1986-92, ave 55.56

Imran Khan 1986-1992 is almost certainly a highly credible six.

West Indies picked 4 quick bowlers plus Harper quite a few times in the mid 80s.

FWIW, during the Rest of the World XI vs England in 1970, there was quite a surfeit of All-Rounders performing well in their other suits.

Batting AR like Sobers, Barlow and Lloyd were taking wickets galore. Sobers captured the most amount of wkts for the series, Barlow had a hat-trick, Lloyd had the best bowling average.

Bowling AR like Procter and Intikhab were scoring 50's and extending the tail.

Ray Illingworth was scoring 50's almost every match, surprising many.

Tony Greig and Basil D'Oliveira were also amongst the runs and wkts to a lesser degree IIRC.

David Gower belongs in the argument for a 70s-90s side. Not a lock for a spot but worthy of consideration. And ***eh too.

Usually when the series was already won. Their typical team was:

Greenidge
Haynes
Richie
Viv
Lloyd
Gomes/Logie
Dujon
4 fast bowlers
