Ashwin's streak and position

not a week goes by that Ashwin seems to be near the top of some sort of bowling list.

Is he into the ATG bowlers category yet? What more does he need to do?

Where does he currently rank in the list of ATG spin bowlers and also among AT Indian bowlers?

I have seen a bit of him but not enough to come to any conclusive judgement?

Thoughts? Especially from people who have followed his career closely?

Answers:

No. Perform better away from home.

Low. Probably pretty high as they don't produce many.

Watch him more.

That's about it. Back to you in the studio, smali.

He is all of the following:

(a) a better bowler than Lyon
(b) a better batsman than Lyon
(c) a better batsman than all other Australian batsmen, other than Smith (who is only slightly better)
(d) very intelligent, potentially a genius.

Burgey and Gnske agree with the above, pretty sure.

Jono's answer unintentionally demonstrating what's wrong with Indian cricket in an (obviously also unintentionally) eloquent way. They're happy just plodding along being better than another middling (albeit currently WPNC) off spinner, instead of setting their sights on actual greatness. Mediocrity writ large in the penmanship of 1.2 billion hands.

Whoa! Are you implying he is better than Voges?

If Ashwin does not end up with 300 test wickets by the time this never ending home season ends, I would be surprised.

It might be a World Cup for the rest and it might be World Rankings for us, but for India, it's all about bettering Australia.. they don't even consider any other team a worthy number 1..it's just Australia who are a worthy number 1 in their eyes and once they beat them, they will then be the undisputed number 1 team

Emphasis on genius. I heard the man has an IQ in the upper 200s range and listens to only Brian Eno on repeat.

Also the greatest captain the game never had.

So basically the next Warney :p
Except Ashwin is pure and without vice, beyond humanity.

He's the type of guy who if a dying leper came up to him asking for dollar or two for change he'd say something profound like "I could perchance permit you some change, but ask yourself this, will it change you?"

ftr have heard around the traps that he was a loose unit when down in Aus in 14/15.

To be an atg spinner, he needs to do a few things imo:

1. Get his away average 30 (particularly outside asia). Might seem like a random number but the gold standard among spinners average less than 30 away. This is of course assuming that he keeps killing it at home.

2. Outside his own team, no other team plays spin particularly well, so he needs to turn it on in one of Eng, Oz, Rsa. Y? Because all these teams have fairly decent batting lineups but suck in India. So a test of Ashwins greatness would be to perform against these decent batting lineups in their own country.
