5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Am I wrong in enjoying the Lord’s and Oval tests far more than the dreadful roads served up elsewhere? I know the weather has played a huge part here but I didn’t enjoy the other games so much. So speaks an old bowler!

Makes a change as Lords is usually the flattest crappest pitch of the summer and Oval not much better.

Whatever transpires tomorrow this has been one of the most enjoyable series in England in a long time. I have to say on a personal level I would normally be desperate for England to win but given circumstances this year I am finding it hard to think it matters that much in the grand scheme of things.

First time I've felt like that over cricket but I know I won't feel the same come November and Ashes.
Tbf the Stokes era has led to a fair few great series, especially at home, so it's probably only the best since two years ago. Tough field though.

The Oval was more like the pitch you see at county games over the last few years. Enough grass on to give pace and bounce and sideways movement. Lord’s is usually a chief executive pitch, making sure of five days income.

He has been done up like a kipper after playing practically no first class cricket. Not that surprised he did little here. Poor planning from Key, McCullum and co.
I get that he's the next cab and all that and you might not treat county cricket as the best training ground sometimes, but you've got to make sure your spare batter gets some game time.

India and Australia series in England are pretty much always really good.
Even India away, though it wound up 4-1, was I think close in the 4th test so a decider was still on the cards with a couple of hours left.

think it was the 4th anyway, where they wound up winning by 4 wickets

That could easily be a comment from either set of fans tonight.

Smith is the key. He goes we are toast.
It depends if/when he goes.

If it's with 15 runs or less they'll probably win regardless.

If it's in the first few overs & they've barely troubled the scorers then possibly.

We had a first innings lead before collapsing in our second innings in that Test, the third Test we were ultimately beaten heavily but were competitive in patches, it was only really the final Test when the series was decided, when I think everyone’s brains were frazzled that was a complete blowout from start to finish

Absolutely not, Headingley was a good Test in the end, Edgbaston and Old Trafford threatened to be classics, but in high-scoring Tests like those you do run the risk of it ultimately not being close, or being a bore draw. I think this shows that you can try to prepare whatever pitch you like, but the weather has the final say!

So far a thriller of a match. 35 runs, with 4 wickets remaining. The objective is simple for India. Get Jamie Smith out, and they'll be on their way to win, barring a Rabada-Jansen style (from last December) rearguard to somehow save the match from Overton and Tongue. Can't see Woakes doing much apart from blocking, considering his dislocated shoulder. At least Pant was able to hold a bat with both hands. The only silver lining for India is that their bowlers will get a much needed rest, allowing them to bowl in a much fresher mode. Also, England's tail is not Australia or South Africa. Jamie Smith, though a remarkable player, hasn't had much experience in these type of scenarios, and it showed in his tentative swings outside off.

It's still England's game to lose at this point, though. They have usually been better at handling crunch moments. Apparently the groundsmen have done them a favor by not cleaning things up faster on Day 4 (thanks a lot, Gambhir), and with a roller to be potentially used, it may not be as much of a minefield as it was today after tea. Regardless of how this match ends, and I think we will have a 3-1 England victory (hope I'm wrong), both teams have quite a few questions to answer. England for the Ashes, and India for the development of a new side.

don’t want to join in on a pile on because i’m sure he is feeling it too but siraj might actually have cooked the series with that mistake
not only did it cost the 90 extra runs that brook got and the massive momentum shift of having england back to four down at that point in the game, but they also just entirely lost the plot for the remainder of the session thereafter which is really imho what allowed england to put the foot down and get on top
