4th Test (Old Trafford, Manchester) - 23rd to 27th of July

And that's it for Day 1. Great day's cricket. India are just ahead at the moment. Jadeja and Shardul did well to see of the day's play with no further damage. Pant's situation is a big question mark though.

Pant's injury does make it difficult for India. A lot will depend on what the scans show from the hospital. The best case scenario is that India can somehow make 350+ to give the bowlers something to bowl at. The pitch will deteriorate, so that should help. I think the best thing for the Indians to take out of their stunning loss at Lords is that they now know England's batting lineup is not as invincible as they seem.

The worst case scenario, however, is that India are quickly bundled out for 300-310, with Pant unable to bat. And then England will reach parity or even a lead in the 1st innings.

It will be a test for the England batters on this pitch, especially as it deteriorates. They are playing with 3 passengers at the moment in Crawley, Pope, and Stokes (only with the bat). And hopefully India have figured Duckett out by now. A lot will depend on Root, Brook, and Jamie Smith.

Decent day of cricket. I was driving today so decided to bail to try and beat the traffic when it was clear it was just going to be spin to see out the day. One over later Stokes decided enough was enough so that plan never really worked out but nevermind.

Looking forwards to India being blown away by the new ball in the morning, hopefully watching the world’s two best batsmen bat at some point, and the ****tails at the open bar given I am enjoying this one Burgey style

Also the light call seemed odd to me, personally felt it was darker a couple of hours earlier

Let’s say Pant can’t come back this Test, India would probably have settled for effectively 264-5 on day 1 on what looks like a traditional Test wicket which will deteriorate, effectively starting the second innings on 0-1 would be a blow though

Be interesting how much this pitch deteriorates, if at all. In the county championship it’s be difficult forcing a victory (albeit only over four days) and maybe that extra day will make all the difference but it looks another very flat one.

With that in mind and the Pant injury (if that’s the end of him for this Test) maybe it’s slightly England’s day but not by much for me.

It's insane how drastic the difference between Gill's first 4 inns and the last 3 inns this series has been.

Could be the difference from India being 4-1 to 1-4.
