1st Test (Leeds) - 20th June

Yes, it took a lot longer than I had hoped for them to figure it out. I do think they cost us the Australia series. I was calling for both of their retirements for several years now. Whatever it was, it seemed terminal for both for a while.

Kohli especially was very sad to watch given how much importance he placed on Test cricket - and his continuing support and dedication to keeping Test cricket supreme is something I will be most grateful for (even more than his batting at his best). He was a much better batsman than the 46 average he ended up with.

His average in October of 2019 was 55, after 81 Tests!

Then a bunch of things happened - his batting got a lot worse along with the fact that batting in general got a lot harder (especially in India), which overall just tanked his overall figures.
You end up with exactly the average you deserve. No point being sentimental about it. A 5 year-rut is close to 40% of his entire career.

I understand how math works - I am talking about what if, if he had retired a few years earlier. Probably around 2022 or so I think a lot of people realized he seemed done.

Do Indian fans think that Sudharsan is a better player than Sarfaraz or Nair?

I don’t see it

Not an Indian fan but I have faint memories of Nair and I remember him being better than Sudharsan. Sarafaraz might be fried in England though then again, this was basically a Rawalpindi pitch but with duke ball.

Sudharshan's got talent. No harm giving him a few Tests to see if he belongs or has to go away to work some more. Nair has always oozed that Rohit type class though. At least he's in the side but he's in a thankless position this Test; nothing to gain, much to lose. Sarfaraz turned off a lot of people with the manner of his dismissals against NZ. Not sure how he crawls back in.
