    3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

I have always been a little frustrated with England, that in the current era, a good score might be got within 80 overs but leaves the bowling lineup with not very much time to recover if they've laboured in the first inning with the ball. Hopefully they can get a good score over say 120 overs...

    3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

There was a time when we would have thought just short of 3 an over was a ok!

5 worst centres of all time

When I lived in Hertfordshire, Baldock was my home, but for the vast majority of my life I've largely lived in London, especially East London. Yes, it used to be pretty bad but plenty of parts have been regenerated quite well. The aforementioned 'new' towns have very mediocre 1950s post war...

    3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

How long before Crawley is back in the hutch? 10 minutes?

5 worst centres of all time

They are pretty much identikit but I would say Stevenage is the worst of those. Largely because the local populace seem to be the scummiest of those three. I did live in Hertfordshire for a few years, so that's my evaluation after spending a reasonable amount of time at each.

I hope there is a bit of movement in the deck. I think I've said it elsewhere. I know the Bazball approach, but even so you would have thought India's batters would be a lot more vulnerable to sideways movement.

    Lions tour 2025

I have to say that it was a bit disappointing in the 2nd half. Too many loose passes and handling errors at inopportune times. Some good combinations and powerful running in between meaning it was a reasonable amount better than last Saturday.

That was beautiful for the fourth try.

Much better the last 10 or so minutes. More control especially from the back row. Chessum looks a monster.

How important are runs from number 8?

Yeah, “Pivotal” is a word that springs to mind from the dim and distant past….ll

What we learned from the 2nd test

What we have learnt. 1. We really should give more life in the pitch for bowlers. I mean Crawley and Pope have dreadful techniques when the ball rarely moves but you would think Indian upper order batters might struggle a bit more when there is more pace, bounce and sideways movement. 2...

    How good could Zimbabwe be…

Snater and many others are not going to give up a steady CC contract to get probably a lot less for playing for Zim.

    Openers Tax

But one of Cook's assets was leaving the ball. No matter that his technique against top class fast bowling wasn't quite of the highest order, his judgement in leaving the ball would have set him apart from say Pietersen and Bell, the stroke makers from the side that he played with. I think he...

    Openers Tax

I wasn't trying to counteract it to be honest. I would agree that opening is a fairly niche role. I reckon someone like Cook, with is limited stroke play, would probably have struggled in the middle order with more people in the field rather than the slip cordon. The counter point to that...

    Openers Tax

I would definitely think that this is the case. I always reckoned it was probably more advantageous to be an opener, certainly 10-15 years ago in South Asia and West Indies than it might be a middle order player coming in against spin. Re my point about England often selecting another opener at...

England players and selection discussion thread

The suggestion was more that Smith went into the middle order say at 6 with Stokes dropping down given his struggles and that Pope's strokeplay was more suited to a lower middle order spot than at 3. I take the point re Bethell at 3 though.

I'm I certainly don't disagree with that, there was a vast difference. On another front, I'm glad that Pope's obvious defensive issues have been picked up and discussed. It's not like they are anything new but he's bound to fail too often in between a very fluent knock. I watched him bat when...

I thought that Bashir had bowled pretty well in the first test, although I'll admit that I didn't see much of his bowling 2nd test as I was largely away and by the time I did see things on Saturday, the game was already too far gone.

I don't think he's far wrong in suggesting that there should have be a bit more in it for the seamers. That would have made it more likely that the Indian top order would have nicked off. I can't help thinking that Gill in particular has felt right at home with the ball barely moving off the...

    Openers Tax

It has often been an England strategy, especially as we have tended not to produce too many natural 3s.
