States like to think they are independent of the federal government, so you need much less momentum to pass different things - e.g, just convince a few tens of thousands instead of a few tens of millions. Once a state tries it and people realize the world doesn't descend in to a satan-worshipping orgy, most tend to eventually accept it.

OK fine. Righteous indignation over. The evidence is pretty conclusive, and very good that it helps for several conditions. Things like cancer especially, in a palliative sense (helps you eat when you're going through chemotherapy, which is vital to your health). It also helps in conditions like glaucoma. In any case, there are a lot less documented harmful effects and a lot more helpful effects compared with alcohol. And HELL of a lot more than something like cigarettes.
