5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Yeah I agree with you that it would be better if they were. My feeling is that they absolutely should be thinking this way, but almost definitely aren’t.

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Memes aside, surely this England setup aren’t thinking about the draw when they’re picking the team. They weren’t even thinking about the draw when India set them 600 in 4 sessions.

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Heh, I assumed this was with the ball, but it's his batting average. His bowling average is "only" 73.

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

The thinking must be that the difference in spin quality between Root/Bethell and Dawson isn't worth a whole fast bowler. I'd be more on board with that thinking if the fast bowler in question was better than Overton.

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Wow. Interesting choice to shoehorn in a mediocre spinner for every test but the one at the Oval. I know India aren't at full strength either, but they've got a big opportunity to level the series against that XI.

What we learned from the 4th test

The association between attacking batting and "stupidity" is starting to really grate on me. Everyone is trying to find a balance between attack and defence, but it's only when they err in one direction that they get personal remarks about their intelligence. I thought Jadeja didn't bat...

Women's football stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

It’s completely deserved in the sense that none of their opponents have anything to complain about. But calling it ‘grit’ when your QF opponent blazes two game-winning penalties over the bar is pretty funny.

    **Official** English Football Season 2025/26

Getting 75m for Diaz at 28yo is obscenely good business. No wonder Liverpool can buy all the strikers everyone wants on top of Wirtz, they’ve been crushing it at outgoings for years.

England begging for a draw, Manchester, 27th July 2025

Natural instinct is a bit questionable, but in a friendly context people will tend to take it in good faith. I'd say biologically ingrained is really offensive though, I'd be pretty put out if you told me that Irish people had a biologically ingrained hatred of the English. There's an...

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Is there a single fast bowler who played the 4th test that wouldn't be left out of this one in ideal circumstances? Maybe Siraj. Everyone else has fitness/workload questions, quality questions, or both. Such an attritional series.

England begging for a draw, Manchester, 27th July 2025

The writers of the annual Spirit of Cricket showdown are kind of scraping the barrel with this one, but I'm still entertained.

4th Test (Old Trafford, Manchester) - 23rd to 27th of July

He’s come on leaps and bounds since the Lord’s test when the idea of asking him to run the occasional 2 was laughable.

4th Test (Old Trafford, Manchester) - 23rd to 27th of July

Looked like a lapse in concentration from Gill, that’s just not a cricket shot.

4th Test (Old Trafford, Manchester) - 23rd to 27th of July

Gill is playing it brilliantly but a new batsman will find it really hard to start, especially a right hander.

    Great stuff from Gill.
