*Official* Zimbabwe in England (One Off Test)

I can't believe Brathwaite barely averages 33. I thought he was much closer to an Elgar or Karunaratne but says a lot about WI record I guess.

Would be interesting to know what his home average is and how that compares to openers visiting the Windies during his career, it seems like a tough place to open.

A four day test match? Well gee that really gives Zimbabwe the feeling of importance doesn't it. Pathetic.

There’s every chance it won’t even go the full 4 days, but I don’t like that we can’t even be bothered to give them a 5th day, we beat the West Indies inside 3 days in 2 of the 3 Tests last year, yet we wouldn’t have dreamed of only giving them a 4-day Test

Just seems daft to me, not least on a practical level in England with the threat of rain never far away. It's been very dry recently but there are, surprise surprise, forecasts of "something more unsettled" from the middle of next week onwards.

Nothing wrong with 4 day tests imo.
If all Tests were 4 days like we see in the County Championship then that would be fine (try getting through 96 overs per day Ben!), I don’t like most Tests being designated 5 dayers and some Tests being designated 4 dayers, it’s not as if even most 5 dayers go that far these days

Don't hold me to this as gospel.

But I seem to recall Plunket Shield season having a mixture of 3 day and 4 day cricket in the same season. Maybe back in early 90s.

Let alone NZ playing 3 day tests v England right up to 1949, while others wee playing 5 dayers.

I believe South Africa had (maybe still has?) a 3-day FC comp, and that’s fine as long as the playing field is level across all comps, a mixture is weird. This is the cricketing equivalent of a pre-tournament friendly in the grand scheme of things, but a football team wouldn’t turn around and say that teams like, let’s say Montenegro or Latvia aren’t worthy of a 90 minute match, why deny Zimbabwe the same?

I’m not going to pretend this match will last the 4 days, but that’s the reality of Test cricket these days, especially in England, I just think not even offering them the possibility of a 5th day is disrespectful when other countries who not unexpectedly get swept away in 3/4 days are given a possible 5th day. On a related note, Ireland who were presumably not deemed good enough for a 5th day gave England a right bloody nose in 2019 (granted, had Ireland won, it would have been well within the scheduled overs!)
