Bowling a part time leggie for the first time in the 42nd at 4/220 is quite something.
It's racist to say this. Bad man.

For real though, when Maxwell bowls a full 10 and Pat Cummins doesn't, pretty clear sign that it's not a great pitch for cricket.

Wtf is going on? Stoinos and agar both now injured, Matt and head into the squad as replacements. Don't know how we balance the side without a pace bowling all-rounder. Green isn't bowling till the 3rd ODI, stoino and marsh are both injured.

1.Finch
2.Warner
3.Smith
4.marn
5.Green/head
6.Carey
7.maxwell for the next game?

If the wickets are anything like they have been for these and the A games then you don't need a pace bowling all-rounder. You know Stoinis only bowled the 1 over in the first game? Head, Labuschagne, Maxwell even Smith would all be more useful as change bowlers

Agar in particular is a huge loss though, especially with Zampa already out.

Worth stating again because of its (uncomfortable for some) truth - a spinning wicket is much more artificial than a green one, unless the outfield is also bare. If grass can be grown on the outfield, it can be grown on the pitch.
so the most natural cricket is played on really green pitches that has bounce till about midway between the knee and foot, got it

No one really cares though, do they? The fact Green isn't bowling until the third ODI shows how unimportant CA sees the LO component of the tour. They're clearly gearing it all towards the test series (rightly imo).

two things on this post

the first is that it's fundamentally untrue, because just because grass can be grown at a place it doesn't mean that it does, and if there's an outfield where grass can grow but naturally doesn't and you whap some grass on there that's artificial - but secondly and more importantly artificial =/= bad! i would much rather an GMO artificial greentop or dustbowl than the dross we get at the scg rn

Maxwell is a proven match winner, has an outstanding white ball record & is one of best batters on these pitches

Batting him at 7 is a complete waste

Marnus averages 36 @ s/r of 90

Maxwell averages 35 @ s/r of 126

Pretty obvious who should be given the opportunity to face more balls and particularly when Smith is also in the team

Actually, Smith is not needed in this team any more for T20 or ODI, mainly T20. He is just being surplus. Labu, Maxwell being spinning all-rounders and Green, Marsh and Stoinis being pace all-rounders can hold up the middle-order very well with their hitting as well as adding bowling strength..

Yeah, no. Maxwell's recent ODI revivl has been due to him batting 7 normally or 5 when were 3/270 in 40 or something like that. Maxwell averages 27 when you move him to 3 and 4, and performs best when he's given a clear, defined role in the team. Moving him now would be counterproductive. We haven't had a decent no.4 since bailey in the 2015 world cup, and the constant swapping of smith between 3 and 4 with guys like handscomb, ussie etc did more hurt than good for the team.

Agree on t20, ODI is ridiculous. Saying smith isn't needed in ODI's is the same as saying root isn't needed in odi's, or kane isn't needed in ODI's. The 3 of them average well over 50 at 3 and are a huge part of their respective team's success.

Yeah the obvious thing about this is that Maxwell typically faces far less balls than Marnus before he gets out.

You can name him "at 7" and still bring him around the 35-40 over mark whenever a wicket falls if you need to. That's exactly what his role should be. Just putting the higher strike rate bats up the order in case they literally never get out is stupid.
