The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread (white ball edition)

Yeah that was an awesome team.

Having Klusener, Pollock and Boucher in the middle order, as well as the bowling of Kallis in the top order, was the big differentiator imo. We had 6 guys who were good enough to be picked for most teams as specialist bowlers without compromising on our batting at all.

EDIT: Guys like McMillan waiting in the wings too.
Cronje's bowling always gets overlooked. A Pollock, Kallis, Klusener, Cronje attack isn't too bad by international standards, with Pollock's strength covering a bit of meh elsewhere.

As bats they are actually strong by specialist standards. Pollock is meh, but everyone else is very good to awesome.

Yeah fair enough, didn't really watch Cronje live as I was too young, so I do tend to underestimate his bowling.

Polly at 8 was ridiculously good, but yeah, all bar Polly were good specialist-level batsmen, and all bar Cronje were specialist-level bowlers.

Quite ridiculous, and it hurts that we're now fiddling with guys like Dwayne Pretorius to fill our AR quotient.

You aren't alone in underestimating Cronje's bowling... he was guilty of doing it himself.

He was pretty good by 5th bowler standards, although he was sometimes playing as the 6th or 7th bowler. Kept things very tight- ER of 4.4 per over. Hardly ever bowled a bad ball. Hardly ever bowled a good one either though- 120kms per hour with an old ball and not being a big mover of the ball isnt exactly threatening stuff.

XI of players who have played in both a world cup final win as well as loss.

Sachin Tendulkar
Gordon Greenidge
Ricky Ponting
Vivian Richards *
Michael Bevan
Yuvraj Singh [5]
Moin Khan +
Wasim Akram [3]
Joel Garner [1]
Muttiah Muralitharan [4]
Glenn McGrath [2]

Turns out Moin Khan is the only wicketkeeper who qualifies.

Also, Yuvraj did not bowl in the losing world cup final (which screwed me in ongoing draft). If we wanted to include 5 bowlers who bowled in both losing and winning final, then Jayasuriya can come in for Greenidge.

This is what I'll change it to then:

Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya [5]
Ricky Ponting
Vivian Richards *
Inzamam ul Haq
Michael Bevan
Moin Khan +
Wasim Akram [3]
Joel Garner [1]
Muttiah Muralitharan [4]
Glenn McGrath [2]

Haq a better overall batsman than Yuvraj? Lloyd another option.

Whatever it takes!!!
Inzy is fine. That is a bloody strong side. Can give other ATG sides a run for its money. I will have a go:

Rohit Sharma
Brian Lara
Virat Kohli
AB De Villiers
MS Dhoni (wk) (c)
Michael Hussey
Kapil Dev
Shane Warne
Mitchell Starc
Curtly Ambrose
Shane Bond

Would love to add a spin bowler there. So Symonds walks in as the 6th bowler(not the 5th bowler though) ahead of Sanga.

None of Symonds, Hooper or Jayasuriya are bowling all-rounders
Yeah but I hate seeing a side as imbalanced as that one. Unfortunately, England are gonna put out an exact XI like that real soon in ODIs.

Also, Jayasuriya spent a number of years as a bowling allrounder who batted 7 or lower.

Symonds and Jayasuria are batting all rounders, imo.

If I wanted a spinner I would probably change the XI to

AC Gilchrist
Q de Kock
KC Sangakara
ABDV
MS Dhoni *
JC Butler
Shakib al Hasan
Imran Khan
Andrew Flintoff
Kapil Dev
Shaun Pollock

12th man: Shahid Afridi
