You just can't be 20 off 50. We've gone back to Gup's World Cup mode of chewing up a shitload of balls and making little attempt to break up bowlers' lengths.
Strange tactics. Why pin your hopes on taking 70 each off Marsh and Zampa?

Really think they’ve gone about this with the wrong approach tbh. Best time to bat is agains tthe new rock and they went pretty conservative trying to preserve poles for later, when it’s only going to get tougher. Time will tell I guess

No idea. It seemed absolutely clear to me that we needed to score runs when the ball was at its hardest, given the pitch has a bit of two-paced nature about it. Yes, Cummins and Hazelwood are absolutely world class, but there was little intent to come at them or be aggressive to take it back to them. Those guys are absolutely unplayable sometimes when you let them bowl at you.

Kane's 12th ball, he came down and went over the top to Marsh. Even now he's just come down at Zampa to sew a seed in his mind.

Guptill just struggles against the top teams. The series against India was a rarity for him, he's averaged like 24 against Australia, England, India, South Africa in the last three years.

Sort of pitch where Latham would probably do well if settled, could have been worth opening with him.

I've now heard Smithy say that Nicholls is a good foil for Gup because Gup is a striker, a hitter, and then Symonds saying this sort of innings is out of character for Gup. It's not. Against good sides, and under pressure, especially away from NZ grounds, he's having significant issues.

Yeah, agreed. He went well to be fair in the Indian ODI series, but that's as much to do with the get out of jail free card he gets to play on our smaller grounds. He just seems to mentally jam himself up against good sides. Actually seemed to want to break the shackles in the WC final but then got pinned.

Wasn't always the case, hit a magnificent century last time NZ were in Australia for ODIs and then again vs South Africa at home - 180 I think in 2017. Since then hasn't really been the same player.

This sort of innings from Guptill might be fine if he had the ability to flick a switch and suddenly start scoring at a good rate, but he's never shown that from what I've seen. When he's struggling, he's really struggling.

Obviously Kane and Stead had other ideas, sent out the openers with a message to block it out until the end of the first 10. Perhaps they haven't done their homework on Zampa?

So, uh, without anyone really noticing Zampa has actually gotten really quite good in the last year hey

Awful innings from Gup. Criminal to bat that slowly then get out that limply. Has all but doomed our chase.
