Duminy got heaps outbowled by Elgar this year. Decent one day bowler but not convinced he actually plays much of a role with the ball in Tests. Seems to be one of those things that's talked about more than actually happens.
The injury affected him this series imo. He routinely outbowls whatever specialist spinner SA usually pick.

Yeah he looked a shadow of himself really.

The last time he played in a home series he acted as the first choice spinner and he was South Africa's second most successful bowler, admittedly in a poor series for them.

Steyn - 12w @ 26
Duminy - 7w @ 37
Philander - 7w @ 51
Morkel - 6w @ 64
Abbott - 3w @ 43
Parnell - 2w @ 16
McLaren - 2w @ 60
Elgar - 2w @ 71

Of all the things to go wrong for South Africa in this series, I think playing Duminy as the fifth bowler did kind of work out.

He's exactly the sort of troll bowler who England specialise in giving cheap wickets to.

Was that the series vs Aus? Didn't he pick up most of those wickets in really facile ways when Aus were slogging at Cape Town?

Shh.

My efforts to prove his case with numbers were intellectually dishonest at best as I knew that, but I do think he bowled pretty well throughout the series. Using Duminy and Elgar as the fifth bowler and playing four specialist quicks is still by far their best option at home IMO, especially since I think Duminy's got more to give with the ball than he has lately.

There's been loads of talk about Duminy giving up bowling recently.

And by loads of talk I mean that Firdose Moonda has quit rightfully said that he does need to start scoring more runs, more regularly.
It's be a shame if anything of that sort happened, and I don't think it's likely that it will as they very much need his bowling in ODIs but it would be great to see him actually assert himself as a Test batsman

I think long term it's not a massive blow, as Rabada and Abbott look extremely promising. But yes, for the series, it's a huge loss.

Steyn is almost definitely out for the first Test, and Philander might be out of the first three Tests - definitely out the first two.
