How long was left in the match? Didn't India lose early on day 5?
needed to bat for just 45-50 more overs as the deficit had almost been cleared.
India lost their last 5 wickets for very little...

harby and tail probably would've made a better attempt at hanging around too if dhoni ...

India batted five sessions scoring 450+ runs in the 2nd innings at Centurion, which is a pretty good effort. The real fail was that we conceded 620-4 in four sessions. That is complete and utter failure.. if even they had been made to work a couple more sessions to get those runs, there would have been a chance of batting out a draw.

What about knocks like Sangakkara's recent ton in England, his century on the last tour of India and Tendulkar's 50th century in Centurion? While not technically dead rubbers, the knocks all came when the match (or series, as the case may be) was over for all intents and purposes. Really, it's pointless to dissect their careers into such small samples. It's utterly meaningless and useless. I'd go as far as to say that you're insulting the legacies of both Tendulkar and Lara by indulging in this nonsensical statsguru warfare.
But for Sanga's ton, England probably would have won the match. game certainly wasn't over when Sanga came out to bat.

I agree - England may have won that match if not for Sangakkara's ton. However, that was not in contention. Sri Lanka had no chance of winning or leveling that series when Sangakkara came out to bat (hence why I added the bit in brackets in the post you quoted). The series was England's before his innings even started so it really wasn't any different from a dead rubber innings. That was my point.

lol you people are so hung up on statistics which are virtually impossible to put into proper context. Lara for me was the more talented and better player, especially when he was focused on the job. Lara had a greater range of shots, was more imposing and dominant when he got set and was far more attractive and entertaining to watch. Tendulkar was a model of consistency and longevity but Lara takes it for me as the best batsmen of the generation in question.

Yeah, but Tendulkar managed to be the batsman of two generations - 1997-2003 and 2008-11. Taste them apples.

What apples? Are you hungry? Lara at his peak > Tendulkar at his peak. A focused Lara > Tendulkar in form.
Do you consider Waqar Younis as the best pace bowler of last 30 years?

If not, then you don't deserve to eat an apple.
