A Batsman's 'Prime'

Something similar happened with Dravid too.
Yup, Ponting, Dravid have had amazingly similar careers as far as stats go...

Shame with both, honestly... in 2006 i was ready to proclaim them as No1 and 2 in the "best ive ever seen list" if theyd just carried on for a few more years... but imo their form after that was just god-awful, and cannot and should not be ignored. As it is, theyre right up there...

Sobers too averaged well over 60 at one point in his career iirc

And how about this from Michael Bevan for an extended ODI run:

1994-June 2001 160 Matches 5338 Runs, Average: 58.02

Those Ponting statistics are extraordinary. 50-70 tests is a career for a lot of batsmen. To average 65-75ish is mind boggling. How many of those tests were at 3? I imagine it's even more to his credit that he doesn't get the advantage of too many not outs and didn't play too many tests against useless minnows.

While I've grown to love Ponting and don't want him unceremoniously dumped, in some ways it is sad he is no longer the batting titan he once was. He's too good not to be feared by opposition teams.

Sadly i don't think he is now. The aura about him has gone as we have seen too often that he is only human and not just a run machine like he was for so many years. Certainly last winter I feared that others would do the damage rather than him as he looked so out of nick.

Ok, i take back what i said about Ponting having the best post-bradman peak ... its clearly Sobers imo

52 Matches 88 Innings 5468 Runs Average: 72.90, 19 Hunderds, 20 Fifties

Far more impressive imo than Ponting's run, because this run of 50 odd test matches came over a period of 11 YEARS!!!

From 1957 to 1968, Sobers averaged 73... simply mind boggling :-O

RT Ponting Mar 8, 2002 - Nov 27, 2000:
52 Matches 92 Innings 5813 runs Average: 74.52, 23 Hundreds, 20 Fifties

Holy **** is the only way to describe it. Best run for any batsman since bradman
Extraordinary numbers but a few things to consider : 1) It was a period when an insane number of batsmen filled their boots (Moyo, Dravid, etc.) 2) Removing West Indies, Bangla and Zim, the figure drops to 68 (still awesome). 3) Interesting to note that his away average after removing these three teams in this period is a spectacular 51 but it is still some way off his home average of 79 during the same period. Now by no means is he a Sehwag or Sangakkara in terms of scoring runs away but his away record always pulls him down I feel. Even now his away record languishes in the mid 40s. Assume the period you mean is 8mar 02 to 27 nov 2007 and not 2000 btw.

Ricky Ponting ( 1999-2006 ) : 8114 @ 65.43 from 87 tests
Jacques Kallis ( 1999-2005 ) : 6433 @ 64.97 from 73 tests
Sachin Tendulkar ( 1997-2002 ) : 5705 @ 63.38 from 59 tests
Brian Lara ( 2001-2005 ) : 5134 @ 61.85 from 47 tests
Rahul Dravid ( 2000-2006 ) : 6400 @ 61.53 from 72 tests
Kallis's will go till 2007 and Sachin's till 2004, if you are looking at those stats alone.

Jacques Kallis ( 1999-2007 ) : 8263 @ 65.06 from 90 tests
Sachin Tendulkar ( 1997-2004 ) : 6773 @ 62.23 from 74 tests

Actually, that whole thing (now deleted) is wrong because it thinks a batsman's home innings all come before his first away innings; hence the funny dates. I'll try again. :p

Basically, for people who couldn't be assed reading that, how many matches does a player how to have played before I can consider his 'prime' batting average?
20

Even though in another thread we showed that you need 80 tests before you will have an indicator of where they will be at the end of their career (e.g. Mike Hussey) - I think 20 is a decent sample for your purposes.

Hope that helps.

Lets take a classic case of now. Ponting v Samaraweera, Ponting may end with a lower test average after a stuttering end to his career but nobody in their right mind would pick Samaraweera over Ponting. His end figures won't do full justice to how good he actually was despite them being very impressive now anyway.
This is one of the things that a prime could be useful for. It could help give credit to players who dropped off towards the end of their career. Neil Harvey, for example: he spent most of his career in the mid-to-high 50's.

20 game qualifier: 65.29 after 24 matches
1/2 career qualifier: 61.73 after 39 matches (79 matches)

Okay, this might still be slightly buggy, but I think it's right now..

If you do the same thing but use my standardised averages formula instead of scorecard runs, you get a pretty different list:

This does show how insanely consistent Steven Waugh was. Even more impressive when you consider what bowlers were around in the early to mid 90s. Not often brought up in the discussions around greatest batsmen. Time to reconsider?

To be fair, one could definitely argue that 12 not outs in 40 innings would inflate the old average a bit, not to mention reduce the sample size in a way given average is a runs/dismissals calculation at a basic level. 40 dismissals may be a better measure than 40 innings, but that'd require some serious code adjustments.

Could you please explain the idea of standardisation to me EWS? I don't understand it fully :(
