Best against the best

Dont forget his 97 SA tour too. 1st test Day 1 he decimated SA hopes, by day 3 the series was all but over for SA, they were destroyed. All the pre tour hype and crap in the media by ex-SA players was insane, only took 4 days for it all to stop! Then we blitzed them in the one day series too, one of my favourite one day series ever, two very strong teams battling it out. Donald was VERY fast that season.

No way, Burge.. He set the world on fire in the 97 Ashes itself... And was awesome in 95 at home against Windies and away..
Yeah, I'm agreeing with you. I think he was really good pre-98. He got better, bit was one of the beat around by the period you mention anyways.

Looking back at some of the teams they've had, it's hard to explain SA's abject record against Australia.. I think they won a series against them for the first time since readmission in 2008.

Indeed. SA started out as favourites in some of the mid to late 90s series.

SA never beat Australia anywhere in the period 95-99
Australia have been the main reason SA are never talked as a great team . They have produced more great fast bowlers than any side in last 20 years.( Donald, pollock, steyn, Ntini) and one of the greatest all - rounder kallis . Yet hardly anyone mentions them as a great team.

Yeah that's true. Morkel on the rise now too, it seems. Early days of course, but he's a nasty proposition.

I expect them to win against Australia later this year though. Hope Steyn has a great series.

Pessimist I am, I predict we wont win a single test against SL, SA or India. Will probably beat NZ 2-0 but you never know. Will be mighty surprised if we do sneak in a win against SL SA or India.

Certainly wouldn't count Australia out. But if SA can get Tsotsobe to perform a decent job as 3rd seamer (he did OK against India but seems to be out of form and struggling a bit in FC cricket lately), I think they have a stronger team on paper.

Stuart MacGill was a better batsman that half of the guys Hadlee knocked over when he played Australia.

Ambrose would also be right up there IMO, without having checked the stats.
Yes.

And looks like Kumble was the only bowler who came close to dominating OZ consistently in 1995-08 period. Everybody else was flat against them in OZ or at home

Dreadful thread this. I gave up after a few pages of the usual crap: brief attempt at serious discussion of an interesting topic; some Indian fanboy brings up the inevitable subject of how great Sachin is; the usual suspects start micro-analysing every available statistic in a way that happens to support their own pre-conceived theories (which in turn happen to big up players from their own countries).

Sorry to sound cantankerous but it would be just great if those concerned could start to recognise the warning signs and begin to moderate their own behaviour accordingly.
Don't want to sidetrack the thread or anything, but post number four was the first one in this thread that mentioned Tendulkar.

Well, I am not referring to that article with regards to batsmen mentioned amongst the greats. I meant in general conversation.

Also, it's not purporting Shastri is one of the greatest batsmen by the looks of it. He averaged 30 against the great WIndies attack - as stipulated in that analysis. It's not a perfect analysis though. It starts considering the Australian attack from 1985 and which is silly. It also doesn't seem to differentiate between attacks that were truly great or attacks that played under their name. Like the series Gavaskar played when WIndies had their bowlers at WSC or Tendulkar played when Australia didn't have her best bowlers.

This is probably a good time to quote SS's post saying that CW has long since passed the point where the paranoia over Tendulkar exceeded the actual hype over him. CBA digging it up though.

Murali always used to get injured while facing Sehwag. Sehwag has won India 2 test match in SL. Murali with all his doosra and teesra could never win SL a test match in India.

Sehwag was the top scorer in 2008 series in SL. And Murali who took 20 wickets in that series was injured.:laugh:

Bowlers always get injured when they see sehwag in full flow.

Only Murali was injured . Tendulkar was never injured.

Averages 70 with SR of 94 in SL and Murali took 28 wickets in those test
All-round records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

Averages 79 with SR of 106 in IND
Batting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

So the fact is bowlers always get injured when they see Sehwag.

Warne was also injured in 1998 series in India
And Sehwag_fan just fails to notice that ALL the above matches were POST hamstring injury of Murali. Sorry, you look like a top class numpty when it comes to understanding the points. anmd before 2008, Sehwag Only averages paltry 22 against SL. His rise vs SL was coincidental with the retirement of Vaas and fall of Murali. Unlike other Indians, who score no matter which bowler played.

While sehwag_fan's intentions in this thread are pretty clear, it's also equally stupid to dismiss Sehwag's achievements vs. SL based on one bad series in 2005. And Murali bowled pretty damn well in 2008 IIRC.
