Read's overrated with the gloves anyway, bad judgement at what's his and what's first slip's

Agreed. He has been built up into this mythical "Alan Knott re-incarnated", but I wasn't that impressed. Don't get me wrong, he's a good keeper, just not streets ahead of any Englishman since Jack Russell, contrary to popular perception.

As far as I'm concerned Nic Pothas is far and away the best wicket-keeper batsman in the country. There's plenty of good reasons for not picking him, but he's undoubtedly the best IMO.
England could have picked him in 2007 instead of Prior. Looking back it would have made sense especially given Trott is playing now.

Jones has scored these against useless Division 2 bowlers.

Chris Read is the real forgotten man and should be next in line. He's scored 1008 runs at an average of 77 in Division 1.
Yeah, and has shown on several occasions that he is not of the requisite class. He's ruled himself out of selection anyway by going to play in the ICL, so that is why he hasn't been mentioned. Not that he should be considered anyway, he has had his chances, and failed.

Geraint Jones has enjoyed an outstanding season this year. Promoted to number 3 in the order for the CC he's had the kind of season I hoped he would, not necessarily because it would propel him straight back into the England reckoning, but I am a fan, he's certainly a team player and the kind of personality where all the team-mates will want the player to do well.

His keeping did improve while he was England's choice, and as stated he was eventually dropped because he was no longer scoring the kind of runs that was expected. At 33 it would be a backward step to return to Jones, however, if no other player is deemed good enough at the time, he may bridge the gap while Davies, Kieswetter etc continue to develop. However, it's a situation I don't expect to occur, James Foster, Tim Ambrose and of course Matt Prior are all above the Kent man and there is no lack of decent options for the selectors, so the best to hope for is that Jones has a great finish to his first-class career with Kent, I for one will be cheering him on.

 What's that got to do with anything?
I think one of the main reasons Pothas wasn't picked other than his age was because he was a Saffie. Thus the selectors ATT was a bit aware of it would make the national side look, thus they where hoping the likes of Prior, Ambrose etc would be enough.

With Trott, given the poor batting options in tests ATM, Trott really had to be picked this time around. If Eng had better options, i'm positive Trott wouldn't have played in the 5th test. The selectors treated him really dumb when he was first picked in the ODI side in 07 if you remember.

I think there's a fair bit of debate about that - reading his cricinfo profile here suggests sometime in 2008...
All that now changed cricinfo profile of him (since it wasn different) is saying now that he is qualified its unlikely he will be picked, since he appeared in the ICL

With Prior being South African and Ambrose being Australian, I don't see the point you're making?

Can't see Geraint ever playing Tests again and can't say I'm that sorry about it. Make no mistake, I backed his selection every time it was made and thoroughly believed he had it in him to make it as a Test batsman throughout his career. But one good season - which is just what he had in 2003, causing his initial selection - is no basis for putting him anywhere near the front of the queue again. He's 33 now, as well. Can't see him playing for all that much longer.

If Prior goes down during the winter, or his wicketkeeping deteriorates again (far from impossible that, BTW), I still hope it'll be Ambrose who gets the gig.

As for Read, he's still the best OD wicketkeeper-batsman in the country and now the ICL appears to be done and dusted I'd still hope he maybe gets the call if anyone ever realises Prior's OD batting is diabolical, which seems less and less likely all the time. Read, however, was never remotely Test-class with the bat and his Test wicketkeeping (with slips in position) is also a little overrated.
