Protective instinct that is common to a certain extent to all men. Not saying this instinct should always be acted upon, but to say it doesn't exist would be to simply delude oneself.
No, i merely mean that the protective instinct is fairly easily to override in these cases and it should be - i agree if someone you know badmouths your family, its a low blow and it hurts, but some stranger i don't know from adam mouthing off my ma ? I couldn't give a rat's hiney....

Low lifers , having stupid fantasies , having no respect for the women , social monsters , extremely ugly headed , often jobless, chances are that they have addictions , people who think they are there to rule the women , having no basic family training , people who are mis-lead by the media , @%% holes , one's who cannot win a simple heart of a good woman , jerks , retards , rejects of the decent society , people who are just plain jealous , third grade citizens ,people who are fed by mullahs , people who have mental disorders , the ones who just can't help continuously peeping at the women , clowns , people who wanna impress by being a stupid show off , people who are suppressed by the families and the society , people who like to whistle whenever a female appears on the movie screen , people who have mental disorders , pricks , people who cannot live decently , people who don't show respect to others , potential thieves , potential bombers , tender minded jerks who can be mis lead easily by the !@#$in mullahs to finish their already low - life by finishing it off instantly , people who upon having a family dispute blame America for that too , the black sheeps who love to see strikes and the ones who like to damage the shops due to jealousy , people who can't see any person having fun and the people who want to make their face appear on tv while being a part of a violent religious rally etc etc etc ... Proper education and a sane media are extremely good remedies ...........

I find it highly ironic that cultures that claim to 'honor' their women the most are precisely the places where women are most in danger of being harassed if they don't fit in to their preconceived notions.

Isn't there a rather big difference between "being honoured" and "being a symbol of honour"?

mass, incorrect and gross generalization.

Honor is not just about harassment- there is rape, murder, coercion, etc. all into the equation. Either way, education is a component that plays into effect as well - often you find that well educated folks are significantly more respectful of women than illiterate ones.

It's a scale. Educated people in certain cultures - though more liberal than their uneducated counterparts - are still quite a bit more backward* in their treatment of women than educated western people.

And yes, I mean that on average, and not every single person on either side.

* By backward I mean freedoms taken for granted in the West by women.

Never been to movie theaters in Lahore, have you.
I remember watching Sheena (jungle queen ) some thing in the early 80's and I was just a little kid of like 4 years . And once I saw this " Ghost" (*ing Demi Moore) .The best film ever . Saving Private Ryan also attracted me . And hey once a cousin of mine and me did a stunt that we made a plan to see a late night movie show and in those days we didn't even have a licence to drive and on top of that there was a law there that 2 people (both men) cannot ride a motor bike at all . And also my car was locked by daddy so that I can't drive it . My cousin took a veil (just like women ) and sat just like a lady with both legs on one side and I drove through the police raids . haha ! Well saw the movie and it was a pure **** cuz it was an urdu movie *ing Rambo ,hahahah ......Well never forget that stunt !!!!!!

Fascinating thread. Some pretty intelligent debate on this topic. When I first saw it I was thinking this will turn nasty fast, but for the most part this thread is quality. To me, this topic has more complexity than "this decision was right or wrong". I think it's wrong to have gender separation. I believe it's clearly ***ism. However, this is a positive step forward for Pakistan. Since 9/11, the Islamic parties have enjoyed a surge in popularity. Whereas before that event the Islamist had never performed strongly in elections. The dominant parties in the past were never really too religious. After 9/11 and the Iraq war, the Islamic parties were able to take advantage of the perception that there was a war being waged against Islam itself. Once they gained power, they have slowly tried to turn Pakistan into a fundamentalist state, much like Iran or Afghanistan. Fortunately, the Islamist do not hold complete power, or even a majority. So even though the Islamist oppose it, events like the Women's World Cup are possible in Pakistan due to the dissenting majority. Therefore, I think it's a good step forward, even with the warts of ***ism.

Pakistan really is a mystery. On one hand, you can walk down the upscale neighborhoods of Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad and see couples on dates together, girls in tank-tops and skirts, rave parties with alcohol flowing freely. On the other hand, you have this controversy about separating the ***es at a women's sporting event. It's truly a conflicted society, with a tug of war going on between the fundamentalist and the progressives. I hope somewhere in between lies a happy medium that Pakistan can soon arrive at.

Interesting thing about that documentary - I can understand every word. When I listen to Urdu Ghazals, I can barely understand them, but the documentary seems very close to Hindi.

Anyone want to comment on that?
