The Cosy Club crumbling ??? . . . Indian Apex court out to set BCCI's house in order

The Indian Supreme Court today gave clear "instructions" (although the court never uses the words till they pass an order which could be tomorrow) to the BCCI on what they suggested as the BCCI should do

    1. Srinivasan should not be the President of the BCCI
    2. Gavaskar should replace Srinivasan as interim President
    3. CSK and RR should be out of IPL 7
    4. No India Cements Employee should be involved in BCCI in any capacity

The court will pass an order on this tomorrow if BCCi does not come forward and agree to these "suggestions" by then.

Already one can see former presidents coming out and speaking of the rot that is afflicting Indian cricket and the "great opportunity" we now have to clean up Indian Cricket. Of course, all or almost all of them were quiet and did nothing for years when the issue has been raging and NS has been brazening it out - with their support really.

As I write Gavaskar is talking on the TV to answer the pointed question on whether he would take up the job. He said clearly that if the SC asked him to do so he would and it would be an honour. He added, of course, that no one has a choice anyway if the SC asks them to take the job. Nonsense - that last bit. Everyone can respectfully decline for personal reasons and Gavaskar knows that. But it is perhaps understand for Gavaskar to throw his hat in the ring quite willingly while keeping an eye open for the reaction of BCCI and its current bosses in view of his very lucrative contract with them.

Of course Gavaskar can handle the job but whether he is the best man for the job is a question many would consider debatable.

What about Dhoni? Didn't he attempt to save his big boss by not being entirely truthful?

Good decision though.... First step in purging the system of rubbish. Gavaskar may be a biased racist but not corrupt. Woukdve given the post to Shashank Manohar though

Manohar is a parochial ass. I would not want him taking over again.

Judges inserting personal opinions into their pronouncements pisses me off to no end. They're a court of justice, they should stick to their brief. If the person they propose turns out to be corrupt or incompetent in the future, do we get to put these megalomaniacs in the dock?

If anyone with cricket experience (admittedly it's quite a lot in Gavaskar's case) but barely any other relevant experience can be a president for a massive sporting body then you gotta wonder how much and what sort of work that position really entails.

Tendulkar should become president. Another useless title to add to his name much like the Mumbai Indians captaincy, his Indian captaincy etc.

It seems they came to the conclusion (after reading the report of the special committee they had drafted themselves) that the BCCI was an insanely corrupt organization, and that any decision coming through its ranks would be highly tainted and dubious (because of the inside/outside influence of people like Srinivasan and his ilk). Therefore, they superseded the selection matter into their own hands. Also, they named Sunil Gavaskar more as the prototype of the kind of person they were looking for, ex-cricketer with some level of integrity (possibly to reinstate some credibility to BCCI going forward).

But the Justices will have to be very smart to get through to the other side on this one in a satisfactory manner.

yeah, it all sounds a bit amateur, doesn't it?

It's weird that this is coming now; has it been taking this long for the court to deliberate on the matter?

If they'd come out and said "The view of the court is that it is illegal for an owner of a team to be responsible for the running of the governing body" then this would make sense. But they haven't exactly said what he's guilty of. There needs to be something concrete for them to actual pass a decision like this.

They need to take this opportunity and revamp BCCI.

They mentioned it today in hearing. Really hope they actually do it, even if it is exceeding their brief a bit.

Suspending 2 franchisees till a independent probe(Criminal and with respect to Rules) will be good as well.

But just putting Gavaskar incharge without any clear brief or powers would serve no real change probably. Just help in making a example of Srinivasan but rest of the cosy club will eventually take over and he may come back again or become ICC chief as he is set too. (unless jailed or something ofcourse.)

Most powerful cronies and politicians have made all sporting bodies and especially the BCCI their Cosy club. It's just pathetic how they close the ship, modify rules, flout everything and keep clinging on to the money minting press and running it as a business almost. Plus they are pretty much all a law unto themselves. There's no real recourse to a normal fan and it also helps reduce efficiency of performance and infrastructure drastically (less so in cricket, given the extra finances and interest.)

Oh, btw if the petitioner lawyers keep going for the jugular and as the probe goes on Dhoni might face some real uncomfortable questions.

His press conference in Bangladesh was cancelled today as well. Till how long can he avoid ? And what does it make his position as Indian captain ?

Remember he is also Vice President of India cements.

It was more a recommendation at this stage.

Will be interesting if they name someone in the interim order or just give a prototype.

The order tomorrow is keenly awaited.

And this order will just be interim. The case will keep going on with next date fixed for next month.
