Ross Taylor likely to be shafted from the captaincy?

Not only has McCullum proven himself to be a good captain and leader, but the best thing of all is the positive effect it's had on his batting. He's finally delivering on his talent and potential. All positive indicators that he's thriving in the captaincy role.

I agree with Heath. It has worked out well. McCullum has been superb - but it was still a very bad way to go about ditching Taylor.

As you might see reflected in history, however, it's not how you take the throne but what you do on it that people remember.

lol McCullum.
In a frank interview - though he would not divulge what suggestions Hesson gave him about his captaincy - Taylor gave a sense of the loneliness of a cricket captain to whom few people would talk.

As confidant, he seems only to have had Martin Guptill on tour to talk to - even though his grandmother, who helped raise him, had died during the cricket team's tour of Sri Lanka.

Playing devil's advocate here... is it possible Taylor really did not have good man management skills? I mean ffs no one would talk to him.
Absolutely possible. Likely, even.

That's why you need the support of your coach and your senior players to help you out in that regard.
Or alternatively, that's why you need to select a captain with good man management skills?

Again, playing devil's advocate here, and it does seem that he has been treated absolutely awfully in this whole saga so I don't want to look like I'm anti-Taylor here. BUT... its not the coach's job to ensure the captain (who was already in charge when the coach was appointed) to be able to speak to his teammates. The captain, when chosen, should be able to do that at a bare minimum.

Of course the captain should be given a chance to develop and improve, but I'd like to think all captains speak to their players during tours a bit more than Ross seems to have.
lol Jono supporting Hesson in all this is not surprising in the slightest.
I see Jono's baseless attack on Ross Taylor continues.

Install a captain who talks to his players and is pure primal beast and you'll win the World Cup. #cheekybump

Also making fun of Benchy in hindsight.

Hw do you all rate Ross Taylor's performance post the loss of his Captaincy? Seems like his performance has been quite overshadowed by some.

Well he has been more productive under McCullum than any other captain in both forms, so pretty good. I assume that's what you meant, that he has been excellent? Because I'm sure you're not one of those who have seen his relative lack of success in the last couple of months and are trying to paint that as having something to do with an event that happened almost 3 years ago, right?

Some of the posts about McCullum are incredible hey?
Yeah I've put my hand up since then and admitted I was wrong.

At the time Baz was a massive disappointment as a specialist batsman. He was a weirdly both underrated and overrated keeper batsman (best gloveman in the world imo) but apart from a couple of knocks he was a dire specialist batsman for several years and if his name wasn't McCullum should have been on the verge of being dropped.

But full credit to him, not only has he been a brilliant tactician and a leader of men, he's gone from being one of the most frustrating cricketers in the world to a true leader by example. It's crazy how he's changed and I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say I'd given up on him ever reaching his true potential.

The way Hesson and White handled the sacking is unforgiveable* (White still gets "**** off White" etc on CW whenever he appears at a post match thing) and it's further credit to Taylor, McCullum and Hesson as people to patch up the team and make them stronger than ever. I thought we would be finished for years. Definitely the worst I've felt as a fan.

*shout out to scummy Richard Boock for making up stuff about Taylor and putting it in the Herald.

I didn't think McCullum would make a very good captain; I was definitely wrong there.

I didn't really think Taylor was a good captain either though so I was mainly just perturbed about the ridiculous timing and the poor processes involved in making the change than the actual change itself that I was fairly agnostic about.

I've never seen a New Zealand cricketer more determined than McCullum has been in the last 18 months. You can see it in his eyes. He'd do anything for this team.

where them haters at???

they deserved all the **** they got at the time because McCullum was doing pretty **** himself and they handled the sacking of Taylor in the weirdest way for reasons we'll likely never know. It turns out that McCullum really does **** out gold when it comes to tactics and team unity, which there was no way for any of us to know at the time.

McCullum always seemed a bit of a gifted individual who didn't maximise his talent. No one could have possibly expected him to blossom the way he did..

No one is saying these posts were unjustified at the time. Just interesting to read in hindsight.

I do think people had their head in the sands about Taylor's lack of man management ability though.

Personal level man management is something we can only ever blindly speculate about though.

I think him admitting on record he didn't speak to the players much is a give away though. the comments on the loneliness of hotel rooms etc. are alarm bells.

Reminds me of how Greg Chappell described his time as captain. Just was not suited for the social and communication requirements of the role (obv diff eras) compared to Ian who spoke to the players a lot.
