***Official*** South Africa in New Zealand 2012

BeeGee

International Captain
I'd have Ryder at number three personally McCullum is only scoring at a SR around 100 which is probably stopping us from putting up 10-20 more runs.

Black Caps ODI squad:
Brendon McCullum (c), Michael Bates, Doug Bracewell, Andrew Ellis, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Nathan McCullum, Andrew McKay, Kyle Mills, Tarun Nethula, Rob Nicol, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson.
Weak squad (due to injury).

no Taylor + no Oram = 3 nil SA.

Andrew Ellis just comes across as a domestic journeyman to me. Harsh, but that is my opinion.

Don't want him anywhere near an ODI team vs. South Africa.

Guptill
Nicol
McCullum (wk)
Williamson
Ryder (use for the powerplays)
Franklin
McCullum
Bracewell
Mills
Southee
Bates/McKay/Nethula (potential weak links, all of them).

Unlike BeeGee, I'm not willing to say 3-0 to South Africa. The rain is due to affect one game this summer anyway. This team should still be able to compete, particularly in the batting. Taylor and Oram will be missed, though.

Might be time to close the book on Oram, sadly. When is our next ODI/T20 assignment? He may choose to stay around for the T20 world cup.

It's a matter of long-term gain though, Ryder needs to get the message that he's not an automatic pick.

Because he's been such a failure so far. Only averages 36 at a strike rate of 90+, the lazy ****.

Look, I could get leaving Ryder out if we were full strength. But with Taylor, Brownlie and Oram all missing, our batting lineup is just too weak to ignore him. We're already carrying one unproven batsman in Rob Nicol without throwing someone like Tom Latham in the mix.

Harsh on young Latham missing out, tbh. Thought he was the pick of the newbies against Zimbabwe. Could have done a job at no.6/no.7, but I guess they're backing Franklin's experience and (now) part-time bowling so fair enough.

I agree, but I think he needs a few more runs in domestic cricket before he earns a spot against proper international opposition. In any case, South Africa, with their legion of outright quicks, probably wasn't the right team to start him against.

Seeing our knock on Ryder is complacency, "no runners anymore" etc., it has to also be acknowledged another two weeks of this would've been of little use to anyone...

Personally, seeing him to try to bat a full day against Chris Martin and the Aucks may've been worthwhile if Jesse played ball, that was the next round. I'd have then brought him in for the 2nd or 3rd ODI.

Both Latham and Franklin should have been in the squad, imo. With all of the bowling options in the first choice team, there's no point in selecting Ellis in the squad. You'd be better off selecting a backup specialist batsman rather than an all-rounder.

I think they just want to make sure Latham plays a bit of Plunket Shield. He's had his taste of international cricket now and he'll learn a lot from his time around the squad, but if he's kept in the limited overs squad constantly and rarely plays domestic cricket from this point on then there's a danger of him becoming a bit Yuvraj-ish and never really developing a game for Test cricket. He's certainly not at the point where he's conquered First Class cricket.

Of course I could be talking guff as I'm not even sure the ODIs overlap with the next Plunket Shield round, but hey it's a theory.

Franklin is in the ODI squad BeeGee. That's not surprising based on how he looked in the T20s so far. I guess leaving Latham out is a little bit harsh especially when you consider the injuries of Taylor and Oram but he looked a class player and the decision obviously wasn't based on performance. There's more ideal ways to give a guy his first real run in international cricket i guess.

Going to the game tomorrow. It's the most excited I've been about a T20 game, actually.

Before anyone panics, I don't think my jinx is an issue anymore - it was broken with the epic chase against Australia in Hamilton. If we lose, it won't be because of me.

Yeah, I know. DOG was suggesting Franklin got his spot in the squad ahead of Latham. I was saying it shouldn't be a case of Franklin OR Latham, they should both be in the squad, imo.

Interesting hearing Taylor on the radio this morning speaking about Ryder. Seemed as fed up with his **** as everyone else and wasn't exactly keen to have him back in the side. He definitely wouldn't be playing in the odi's if it wasn't for the injury crisis.
