Quinton de Kock

Arguably the best keeper batsman in every format these days. Have been really impressed with his glove work so far in Australia, as well as the gun performances with the bat.

Certainly more than justified the hype from u19s and three day cricket.

Yeah reckon he is past Bairstow and Watling now. Just far higher ceiling with bat coupled with solid glovework. If Bairstow keeps up his glovework of the last few Tests then he will be number 2.

The fact you can already claim he is better than Boucher after such a short period of time shows how good he actually is. Would say he is the nearest thing to Gilchrist any side has produced since he retired and can only get better as long as he stays fit.

De Kock is Nu-Metal Gillchrist. Can bat and keep and like Gilly, loads up on the pull and through mid-off and cover. Is in serious form and maintaining his keeping so let's see if he can do it for as long. Looks bloody good, though, and he's getting a much earlier start than Gilly did (thank you, Heals).

Don't think he's anywhere near Boucher yet, though.

No dispute in general but we're talking about a guy with < 15 Tests against his name vs the world record holder for dismissals and over 10x the number of Tests.

Boucher ended up being a fantastic keeper, but his batting is no where near as good as QDK`s. QDK's keeping has improved a great deal in the last year and, from my understanding, Boucher has spent some time with him.

QdK is nailed on to be the new Gilchrist. Never thought we'd see another one of those. Astonishing talent.

Beggars belief that the SA selectors were messing around with spuds like Vilas last year with him waiting in the wings. Benefit of hindsight and all that, obviously, but still.

Boucher also wasn't a great keeper when he got into the side initially. Was a massive step down from Richardson at first and guys like Palframan were regarded as the better gloveman.

He did go through a bad spot for awhile and I think that they decided to send him off with the SA 'A' for some experience... came back a better player.

Gilchrist comparison sounds a bit vague to me.

In test cricket, yes he could potentially be the next Gilchrist as he seems to have pretty much the same impact on the game that Gilchrist had coming lower down the order.

Its the ODIs where it starts to get a bit awkward, the comparison. Quinton in his short career has proved to be a much more valuable worth in terms of impact AND performance and has performed better than Gilchrist has. Longevity is the issue here obviously as it would be unfair to compare him with Gilly having played just 69 ODIs. But 11 centuries in 69 ODIs is something special that not even the best of players boast of at the start of their careers. Looking at how talented de Kock is if he continues to perform even close to 75-80% of what he has shown us so far he might end the long lasting debate of who should open with Sachin in all time ODI XI.

Gilchrist was pretty awesome in ODIs.. his average was great considering the period he played in. 11 centuries already is great going by De Kock, but Gilly did it in WC finals, CB tri-series finals etc. QdK had a poor WC last year IIRC.

Yeah, and I remember at the time lots of guys thought Nick Pothas should have got the gig rather Boucher, when Richardson retired.

Pothas probably deserved it at the time... but I think that SA where trying to build a team and wanted somebody a bit younger.
