Imran, Botham, Miller and Daylight. Richard Hadlee is the only other all-rounder that comes close for me.

mmm.. there could be hardly five fast bowlers better than hadlee in history, if at all. but his batting was always a notch below a world class all rounder's, i thought. but you can vote for him in the next prelim poll if you want.

I prefer your terminology, 'pure' all-rounder vs 'valuable' all-rounder.I would rate Miller and Botham as purer but Sobers and Imran as more valuable in the final analysis.
the final results are likely to be very close to what you think: s, i, m, b. lets see if j.k or somene else gets in between.

Yeah, it depends what criteria you want to use. I just think Hadlee adds as much to the team on the whole as Botham, Miller and Imran do. No one else adds as much value as those four for me- not even Sobers.

bradman and murali for sure, even though they were specialists

Yeah, they're in the same kind of league, but I was limiting it to all-rounders. Bradman's a freak. Normally I'd say there's little value in adding a world-class batsman to a team in place of a mediocre one, but he's the obvious exception.

Botham is not clearly a class above Kapil. When on song, they match each other very well. Recall the series in England where both these shone with both bat and ball.

Got to say i think this poll is a bit pointless, i mean there are so many mitigating factors not taken into account, for example Botham at his best was probably second only to Imran, but at his worst he could be godawful. Also I don't get you're classification system, there are still batting and bowling allrounders to come? so what does that make this poll? Numbers don't always tell the story with allrounders, shouldn't vettori perhaps feature in this?

Agreed, very hard to split the two. However I'd put Hadlee and Imran above both of them tbh.

That's a foolish statement, a mediocre batsmen (e.g. Ian Bell) is far less likely to score runs against top class opposition as say Greg Chappell (a great one). It's not a case of Greg Chappell averages just 12 more or whatever so it's not much of an improvement, against the best the mediocre usually fail miserably while the best will still do well. If you're putting this side together to play a mediocre side than fair play, it doesn't make much of a difference.

you can take that into account while voting. dont expect me to have separate polls for separate phases of each player's career. we are looking at whole careers here.

read the main thread. there is a link in the first post.

just one more day to go. imran, miller and botham are already through to the finals. will kapil maintain his slender lead over faulkner?

with only three more hours to go, i guess it is safe to assume that imran, miller, botham and kapil are through to the finals. with sobers and kallis joining them for sure and hadlee likely to take up the last spot, the final is going to be full of worthy candidates.
