Phil Hughes to open for Australia, when Hayden retires IMO. Rogers had he chance, so unless he comes back to NSW he should never play again.

I'd recommend that you do the same with mine. I made it perfectly clear that I was digressing.

It is a touch odd, though, to suggest that the first man to take a wicket with his first ball in Test cricket -- and that in his only Test Match -- is unworthy of mention here. He fits the bill quite nicely, I should think.

Total crap. Just admit you made a mistake.:laugh: Your post makes nothing clear other than Coningham is an interesting example of someone who played one Test. You saw the thread title and posted without seeing what the thread was actually about. Of course had you deemed his first ball feat worthy of mention first time around - a "touch odd" not to do so - you might have got away with it.

Meuleman did bat - in his one Test against New Zealand he opened the batting with Bill Brown. Didn't trouble the scorers though.

Please don't tell me that if you had all three in the team Hussey is the last you'd open with?

Neither Katich or Watson should EVER open in a Test-match.

Poor old Greg Loveridge - picked for NZ as our first legspinner since... well... probably Jack Alabaster. NZ bats first against Zimbabwe, he hits a lovely straight drive for four, then gets rapped on the fingers, breaking one in the process. Doesn't bowl, loses all form when he comes back to domestic cricket and is barely heard of again.

Frank Hayes made a ton vs WI on debut in 1973 and barely reached double figures in the rest of his test career.

Richard Ellison's bowling secured the Ashes at Edgbaston in 1985 (tbf he did OK at the Oval too IIRC) but he didn't do a thing after that series.

Talking of Hirwani, there was another Indian spinner whose name escapes me who took a truck full of wickets to win the 1st test against England in 1984/85. I'm not sure that he did a lot after that.

You're thinking of Laxman Sivaramakrishnan - took a 12-for against England aged about 19 or 20 and had prodigy written all over him, but never developed and kicked on the way it looked like he might.

EDIT - just checked and he was actually still 18 when he did that!
