Botham set to receive Knighthood

Didn't Hadlee get a knighthood while he was still playing though?
Unsure about that, but I don't think he would have been given a knighthood because he was a good player. Surely there would have been some other reasons. I probably should have rephrased that last sentence, and put that they are being rewarded for their acheivements off the field.

Yeah. It's a loooong time ago now, but I seem to recall one of the commentators making some comment about the fact that it was the first time a "Sir" had appeared on a test scoreboard.

Well deserved for Beef; both for his charity work & for his cricket. :) I personally have no objection to sportsmen getting knighthoods for their achievements in their fields. To my mind they're no less deserving of them than the no-mark polticians & time-serving civil service suits who get awarded them by the barrowload.

You don't get a knighthood for being good at a certain sport, at least not as far as I know. People like Sir Richard Hadlee and Sir Brian Lochore have both been heavily involved in cricket and rugby respectively after their retirements, doing a lot of hard work so that others can benefit from this. Often when people are given knighthoods for "Services to Rugby/Cricket/Football, etc" they are being rewarded for after they have retired.

Yeah, Hadlee got his while on the 1990 tour of England, I think.

Lochore is a good example of a sportsman who has gone on to be heavily involved in the coaching, selecting and admin side of things (mostly before rugby went professional, so he was as much a volunteer as anyone else), although I think the fact he was coach of the only All Black team to win a World Cup probably got him an extra nod. Hopefully, he's not the last...

Yeah agree with Goughy. Many people don't realise that he has worked tirelessly over the year for Leaukemia (I know I spelled that wrong), and has completed many walks and the like.

Best guy.
CW must provide a spell check option. Seriously.

I'm with James sports people shouldn't be given knighthoods just for services to cricket/football/rugby/general sport etc basically because there are people who go out there saving lives who dont even get an mbe let alone knighthood. But I can see were Isura is coming from sports people do entertain and inspire but they dont save lives some do with Charity and that is why Ian Botham is recieving a knighthood.
It's not the way the world works, why do annoying people get paid 300 million+ for hosting a TV talk show?

Those comments are nothing compared to some stuff you see on YouTube. I'm always sorely tempted to disable adding comments just to stop some of the rubbish you so often get.
