Johan Botha seems set for debut

Allrounder Johan Botha, 23, seems set to make his Test debut against Australia next week Monday. The offspinner made his international debut in the limited overs series against India recently and, with the SCG traditionally assisting the spinners, he makes a strong challenge to accompany Nicky Boje for a two-pronged spin attack.

Due the knee injury sustained by Makhaya Ntini in the last Test, which forced the fast bowler home from the tour, and Justin Kemp’s shoulder ailment; Botha’s chances are further increased.

Not even a year ago, Botha was plying his trade in South Africa as a medium-paced swing bowler, but his conversion to offspin has since seen him rise up the ranks to the verge of a Test cap. Botha has taken his 73 First-Class wickets at an average of 26.93, with 1336 runs (31.80) adding to his worth.

Australia is 1-0 up in the four-Test series, with two Tests to play.
