Would you have both Warne and O'Reilly in your ATG XI?

My Australian XIs are currently something like:

A Morris
B Simpson
D Bradman
G Chappell
K Miller
N Harvey/A Border/R Ponting
A Gilchrist
S Warne
D Lillee
B OReilly
G McGrath

or

A Morris
B Simpson
D Bradman
G Chappell
N Harvey/A Border/R Ponting
N Harvey/A Border/R Ponting
A Gilchrist
A Davidson/R Lindwall
S Warne
D Lillee
G McGrath

I’ll consider Smith and Cummins when they retire.

I can’t split the three middle order bats and I’m happy with any of them.

I can’t split Lindwall and Davidson either (might favour the left armer for variety), both similar with the ball and handy lower order bats.

Such a great cordon with Simpson, Chappell, Miller, Border, Ponting

I'm thinking this XI for Australia:

Smith
Boon
Bradman
Ponting
G Chappell
Miller
Gilchrist
Davidson
Lindwall
Warne
McGrath

Australia has had many atvg but not necessarily great openers. Whereas Smith is an ATG and opens because this team has only 3 middle order players. Even though his stint as an opener was unsuccessful I think he could score runs in the spot at the top of his game. I like Boon because he had the Bruce Laird toughness against pace but has far more class. This side has 3 No. 3s at 3, 4 and 5. I'd consider swapping out Chappell for Border who I think would be more versatile in the batting order. Gilchrist is unchallenged and Miller is the 3rd player picked. Prefer Lindwall over Lillee because he can bat. Davidson's record is fantastic and his fielding and batting press his claims even further. I think Tiger is superior to Warne as a bowler but the difference doesn't matter. Warne is the better batsman and easily superior slip fielder. McGrath is Australia's best ever bowler.

Not very often I disagree with you mate BUT I believe Don Tallon may be a better choice as Keeper. The batting lineup in that side is probably the best of all time and you need a first class Keeper to back up that tremendous Bowling line-up. If he only comes in at #10 then so be it.

I'd still go Gilly but wouldn't mind Tallon. It's not as if Tallon was a mug with the bat either.

Averages 17 in Tests. What's the definition of a mug with bat then!??
Look beyond the headlines. He scored 9 fc tons. It's not as if his batting was needed in the sides he played for. Quick runs down the order is all that was needed and the only opportunity he had after all the guys above him had scored their runs.

And he hardly ever did so in Tests. Pitches in Shield were notoriously easy for batting. Davidson averages 37 on them, Tallon 29. 17 average in Tests for a wk counts as a mug with the bat imho.
