Why was the crowd that stoned the Australians angry?

Hello

Cricinfo has an article about the '82 series where the australian players touring pakistan got stoned and one of them even stoned back :). Anyway the article is very one sided because it does not tell us why the crowd were so angry at the aussies. The aussie were getting their behinds kicked in that series and so that couldn't have been the reason why the crowd was angry. Anyone remember why the crowd was so angry?

Students involved in political protests - nothing to do with the cricket - Pakistan, with Abdul Qadir playing a leading role, absolutely hammered Australia in each of the three tests

The article doesn't really seem one-sided to me, I have to say. Regardless of how objectionable you find a team/player & for whatever reason chucking stones at them is the act of a CU Next Tuesday. The reasons are hardly germane.

Well I say the article is one sided because it goes on and on about how the aussies suffered but makes no mention about why the crowd stoned them. Its like it avoids the most obvious question. Why? There has to be a reason right. No one starts stoning people without a bloody good reason.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering what all this was about.

I dont think the karachi incident had anything to do with people not liking Aussies. There was a lot of crowd disturbance issue on that day.

The most famous incident of the day was when Imran Khan kicked a 10 or 12 year old kid who ran on to pitch during the crowd disturbance and Imran got a lot of bad media attention. A year later when imran got stress fracture, many people believed it was punishment for imran as the he showed arrogance towards that 12 year old when he kicked him and it was god's punishment for his arrogance that same leg got stress fracture the one with which he kicked that kid

My point was tho that, as Australia clearly aren't a team of war criminals or child rapists, I don't think that there's any justification for stoning them so, as such, whatever the putative reason is, it doesn't really matter.

I presume it's a given that there is no justification for that sort of behaviour but I too would like to understand why it happens

Unfortunately my understanding of Pakistani politics after partition is minimal other than that volatility seems a constant - In 1968-69 Aftab Gul was picked to open the batting against England despite being on bail for political offences at the time - apparently the expectation was that if he wasn't selected for the Lahore test there would be riots - it's not a story that has ever been denied so is presumably true

If anyone with an understanding of the politics could explain all the background succinctly I would certainly be grateful

True, but this series was before neutral umpires and should not count:ph34r:

South Africa in 1969/70 pulled off a 4-0 greenwash and I suppose you could say Pakistan did it in 1956/57 though 1-0 in a one off test probably doesn't count

WI in pakistan during the 96/97 season lost a couple of tests by an innings and one by ten wickets if i recall correctly.
