fair enough. i assume honestb isn't marking down teams who have Bevan and Hussey at 5/6 though

If my team is batting first, and had a great start, I would definitely want the below players to bat in the last 10 overs.

Lance Klusener
Kapil Dev
Andrew Flintoff
Shahid Afridi
Jos Butler
Glenn Maxwell

etc.

ODI batting averages should not be the sole criteria in picking players, most certainly not for middle and lower order batsmen. Babar Azam and Faf du plessis are fine ODI players, but a bit one dimensional. If they are picked, they should be batting when there are a lot of overs to be bowled.

all those players originally batted 6/7 because they were all-rounders and for workload reasons thats where they best fit

its not actually a position that only certain players can handle and others can't (like an opener)

IMO anyway

Eoin Morgan being the leading six hitter for the WC (and not Maxwell or Buttler) is the nail in the coffin for me

modern white ball batting has changed

Whatever it takes!!!
Eoin Morgan does not bat top 3 though. He started batting 4 just like Yuvi did and it is a lot easier for a #4 to transition to #5 or #6 on need basis. Top 3 are a different beast when it comes to LO batting.

are there any examples of specialist batsmen having their best position at 6/7 and were there purely because they were most suited to slogging? and not because they're an AR down there for workload reasons?

i just don't see it as this special role only certain batsmen can handle. would your rather Carlos Braithwaite rather than Sachin at 7 because he's had more success there?

well fwiw Viv played far more ODI cricket at 4 then 3. but him at 5 instead of Babar would look silly

Off the top of my head I'd suggest Jos Buttler, David Miller and as Suresh Raina as candiadates there. If you widen the net a bit from slogging at 6/7 to general middle-order rather than top order player, you get people like Hussey and Dhoni who were often the best bat in their team despite playing exclusively middle order. It's a thing that exists, at least.

And yeah obviously there's limits to it, there's no situations I'd rather have Brathwaite then Tendulkar, but there are situations I'd rather have say Buttler than du Plessis.

Dravid batted 5 a lot of the time.. Yuvraj, Kaif, Jonty, Hansie, Bevan, Hussey, Clarke, Mahanama, Jadeja, Inzy for a lot of his career, Yousuf Youhana, Misbah a few times, Hooper, Chanderpaul, and so many more.

Juz because there were more ODI games towards the time of his career when Riche Richardson had broken through, does not mean Sir Viv was not mainly a #3.

Richards batting at 4 isn't really a problem. Nor is Morgan at #5 even though he's a #4 generally because of the sort of game he has. A guy like Babar or Root on the other hand has to bat #3 imo. Depends on batting position as well as role.

So I won apparently based on the poll, and joint winner if you count the vote from Fuller. Like the other ODI draft that I jointly won, I was surprised with so many votes I got. My last 3 picks were just going through the motions really. Anyway, I must be doing something right in ODI drafts, not so much the test versions.

Thanks everyone who voted for me.

Congratulations to both Ankit and Stephen for being joint winners with 7 votes each.

Teuton and KK come next with 6 votes each.

So 3 of the top 4 teams are those that did not jump the gun and go for big name players in the middle stages of the draft. Stephen played it well by picking two quality bowling all rounders in his first three picks which helped him immensely.
