The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Prior was a very good keeper and batsman, one of our best players of the last 20 years or so and a big reason we got to no1.
Prior wasn't a particularly good keeper, but he was a lot better than Geriant Jones. Prior was a very good batsman for a keeper though.

Isn't there like specialist keepers in some test teams now?

1. Shane Dowrich
2. Wridhiman Saha
3. BJ Watling

In the Caribbean, we have a few more up and coming guys: Amir Jangoo(who I think is the best glove man in the region), Bramble, etc.
Watling is a fine batsman. Definitely not just a specialist keeper

Watling started out as a batsman too. Did the opposite of Gilchrist in that he started keeping to maximize his chances of being selected. Not a bad keeper by any means but I doubt he's special.

Prior vs Watling, anyone?

I'd go with Watling but it's always tricky judging NZ cricketers, their stats are generally much inflated relative to their actual ability.

Watling is undersold by his average, if anything. Never seen a keeper make so many tough runs and deliver consistently under pressure. Wish he downhill skis more to get his average on the right side of 40. Played an important hand for NZ in UAE and SL. Can't ask for more on the batting front.

Not sure if you meant this about the NZ players you watched or historically all of them. Hadlee was a true exception to this though. Performed as well abroad as at home. In some of his freakishly brilliant performances, destroyed Australia in Australia and India in India.

Hadlee, to me, is the best post world war 2 cricketer from down under.

Gilchrist over Hadlee IMO.

A bit thin on bowling, otherwise pretty good XI. Only Imran(clearly) and Miller(arguably) are at ATG level. if you pick Hadlee and Pollock instead of Botham and Kallis, all the bases are covered. Would give another ATG team a good run for their money.

That’s 7 keepers and 5 bowlers.
Plus if you’re picking keepers purely as batsmen, Walcott surely gets in ahead of Ames.

No Sobers; I rate Grace highly and Grace is a bigger gain over a bad (in context) opening batsman than Sobers is over Walcott/Flower/whoever. Another option is Rhodes at the top of the order and then another pacer can be brought in ahead of Benaud.

You surprise me bagpath Why would you put Flow.ers and Sangakara ahead of Farok Engineer who I consider the best gloveman to come out of the sub continent .

Because he wants a team of wicket keeper batsmen, not necessarily the best wicket keeping skills.
