made a current world xi and 2nd xi in the shower this morning and need to put it somewhere

warner
karunaratne
williamson (c) (get ****ed virat)
smith
kohli
stokes
watling (wk)
cummins
rabada
lyon
bumrah

im pretty happy with that side. the 2nd xi took most of the thinking tbh

pujara
latham i suppose
root
taylor (c) (get ****ed root)
nicholls
shakib
de kock (wk)
philander
broad
boult
shah

this was a lot tougher. openers are thin, root hates #3 and there is a lot of competition for #4, #5 and #6. everyone hates nicholls for his technique except me so he won ahead of several pakistanis, sri lankans, rahane and faf du abs. holder was oh so close and even cdg in the mix but it's really hard to go past shakibs long record of excellence. im still very close to putting quinton at #6 and holder #7.

bowling was extremely tough with mention to anderson, roach, jadeja, hazlewood, archer and wagner.

With Bradman and Gilchrist in the side, everyone from Sobers on down can bat one position higher, thus affording the luxury of five frontline bowlers for every possible condition.

You don't need that many bowlers, be better off with another batsman and getting rid of one of Imran or Hadlee

With exception of Hutton and Smith (in whose place I typically have Gavaskar and Pollock giving representation to 8 different countries), this is in fact how my ATG XI looks.

Did you fudge the bowling selections? A lineup of atg bowlers is a surprise if you were only considering batting average.

Yeah I'm sure Boult has a higher average at 11 than Murali, and South Africa had guys like Symcox at 10 who were miles better batsmen than Tayfield.

Lol, might be interesting if you applied a minimum requirement of 10 or 20 innings at each position.

Taking since 21 June 1948 on statsguru:

For best batting performances Vettori (49 matches averaging 39.76) is the best long-termer at 8, and indeed the best of anyone playing more than ten matches there. 9 is trickier, Pollock averaged 41 there from 23 matches, Ian Smith 28.46 from 33, Vettori 23.51 from 43 and Broad 20.23 from 60. I think strong no. 9s tend to get promoted quickly, so pick whatever qualifier you want. I'm not even going to try sort out 10 and 11.

The best bowling averages by position for opening (Statsguru doesn't differentiate between 1 and 2) with 100+ wickets are Herath (!!!) (17.32) and Davidson (19.25), for 50 wickets Tyson is the best at 16.83, followed by Herath. Murali is best at three with 20.02 for one-hundred wickets and Laker with 13.92 (!!!) for fifty. Not too many players taking heaps of wickets fourth but Tayfield with 22.30 is indeed best for one-hundred wickets and Marshall (!) (19.13) is best for fifty.

I went for best bowling averages for bowling positions from 1 to 4.

The only fudging is Sobers ahead of Chanders at 6. To give a fifth bowling option

Selection for batting positions 1 to 5, keeper at 7 and bowlers at positions 1,2,3 and 4 are all based on top averages.

The tail looks a bit too long. Needs an extra specialist bat in my opinion.
