Steve Bucknor retires

BTW it's funny how Umpires get different reps in different countries.

So far, with the exception of myself, all the pro-Bucknor comments have come from WI and Australia supporters, and all the negative ones from England and India ones.

Here's the interesting part - who was it you thought was notably better? That could count those from early and later in Bucknor's career.
I dunno really. Most of them!

A few that have struck me as better than average decision-makers are Bowden, Taufel, Shepherd, Bird, Aleem Dar, Venkat.

True, Richard attempt to do a poll from 1 to whatever of how good umpires are... I would do it but I don't know all the umps...

Umpires make mistakes, end of story. People need to deal with it.

Bucknor was a fantastic servant to the game, and must have been doing something right to have remained at the top of his profession for so long. It's a shame to see him go - I, for one, will miss his "slow death" style of dismissal.

Whoever appoints the umpiring panel should have pensioned him off five years ago.

Did the best that a 60+ year old guy could do.

Good riddance. He stayed way past his time. Everyone makes mistakes, he made too many. I can't do a better job, that's why I'm not on the Elite Panel.

I don't blame him, of course. He was good at one time, and it was up to his superiors to send him off. Unlike some, I didn't see him as biased. He did the best he could, but unfortunately, that simply wasn't good enough lately.

Don't see any of you Umpiring International Cricket.
There is a reason: It's because, just like Bucknor, I'm not good enough for the job. Unlike his superiors, I accept that fact.

Haha, so now you're comparing yourself with Bucknor? What a joke.

You have a large amount of fantastic posts SS, but it's clear from a lot of them that you've never played the game that much, if ever.

Not Terrible
Great umpire, had a bad season or two at the end though, some of the derogatory comments are ridiculous though.

I don't know may be my feelings,he had some problem with Indians while playing against the Aussies .He used to mock Indian players in the past too .Like Dravid,Ganguly etc .An impartial umpire should never do that .

Also i remember a banner during Perth test while Pathan and Laxman batting well.''We need Bucknor or where is Bucknor when we need him'' some thing like that .

When did Bucknor mock players? Must say I never saw him do it (doesn't mean it didn't happen of course, just saying I hadn't heard of that before).

The only problem he had with India when playing Australia AFAIK was he got some decisions wrong, then got sacrificed on tha altar of self-righteous indignation.

He sometimes laughed at appeals, but I'm fairly sure he did that to players of all teams. And I'm certain it was good-natured. Rudi does the same, and Darryl Harper.

India have had problems with him in the past, that's why it served as a catalyst and kind of blew up.

Thought he was solid as umpires go TBH. Not really got hugely strong opinions of him one way or the other, although I agree he went on too long.

Would be interesting to see how people would have seen him had he not had that horror series last year in Australia i.e. he retired after WC07.
