Sehwag, an all-time Indian great?

So, Sachin Tendulkar was an aspiring fast bowler who was 'manufactured' into a batsman by Lillee's(?) advice?:p
Really? First I'd heard of that. AFAIK, Tendulkar was (somewhat ridiculously) into international cricket before he'd even turned 17.

Tendulkar attended Sharadashram Vidyamandir (High School)[1], where he began his cricketing career under the guidance of his coach and mentor, Ramakant Achrekar. During his school days he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who took a world record 355 Test wickets, was unimpressed, suggesting that Tendulkar focus on his batting instead.[18]

Been said in a few interviews too.

The book 'making of a cricketer' even has a photograph of Tendulkar with a huge group of aspiring fast bowlers and Lillee.

Richardson was a left-arm fingerspinner who manufactured himself into an opener after losing his ability to do what had initially brought him into cricket.

Simple as that.

KP started of as on off-spinner lower-order batsman into a WC batsman.

Gary Sobers started off as a left-arm spinner. Trasnformed the greatest test batsman after Bradman.

All that matters is what facet of the game you did well in thats what you will be known as & where in ATXI selection you will have consider the players.

Unless you where like a Vinoo Mankad where you could do dual role.

Well... yeah it is. The chance being given is Sehwag's fault and the chance being dropped is the Pakistan fielder's fault.

Does absolutely nothing of the sort.

So?

People who get dropped - especially multiple times - have an exponentially greater chance of getting bigger runs than those who don't.
That's why it's called sports!

And, as pointed-out by Osman Samiuddin (not me).
You mean the guy who writes stuff like this:

"Chasing 405, instead of 500-plus, seemed to buoy up New Zealand, to such an extent that their openers even lasted the entire first over."

Osman Samiuddin, what a hammer he is. Probably one of the worst cricinfo writers (if not the worst), imo

Isn't Deepak Chopra the bloke who preaches spiritual love and cons people out of thousands of dollars in the process?
yeah... he thinks clint eastwood is a manufactured director because he started off as an actor.

it is not like sehwag went through any *** change operation, richard, for you to say "no.. no... he was born a woman; so he cant have a beard". after a very brief, too brief, stint at the middle order, he started facing the new ball. since he is bloody good at that and he has done only that ever since, he is an opener.

Both of these are far from the truth and in reality are a vast over-simplification. Pietersen and Sobers were always high-class batsmen and were always likely to end-up such a thing at the top level. Pietersen was erroneously selected with spin rather than batting in mind and never got a fair chance and had to emigrate to do so; see SJS's post on Sobers (I can't find it and CBA trying really hard) for the truth there. His intial Test selection may have come with spin bowling in mind but he had already shown his skill with the bat and would do so at the Test level before very long.

Well most people on this forum disagree completely - he's one of the most universally hailed around - but you're entitled to your opinion.

It was not a very brief stint at all - until 2002 (when he was 24 years old IIRR, maybe even 25) he had only ever batted in the middle-order. You make the mistake of thinking Test cricket is the be-all-and-end-all; it is not. There are other levels.

How good Sehwag is or isn't at facing quality new-ball bowlers on pitches with a bit in them for seam has still, really, to be seen, and I retain my doubts about his ability to do very well under said circumstances (on the very occasional occasion he's done so so far he's failed).

There is no "is an ___" about it. Simple as. Sehwag begun his career as a middle-order batsman and was manufactured, at ODI then Test level, into an opener.

I think the real question isn't "Is Sehwag really an opener?", it's "considering Sehwag has scored a sick amount of runs opening the batting, who gives a ****?"
