Pitches were not covered regularly until the 1960s.Mr Pilch/Pitch's figures were quite something.
Described as, "the greatest batsman ever known until the appearance of W. G. Grace", he actually averaged 18 with the bat, and 1.35 with the ball.
In spite of his remarkable bowling average, he only bowled some 112 overs in 229 matches. He took a wicket every 4.7 balls.
Must have been playing on uncovered pilches?
Haha. That bowling average is fake – it's all his wickets, divided by the runs he conceded in the few matches in which innings analyses were recorded.Mr Pilch/Pitch's figures were quite something.

They didn't write about how I was cryogenically frozen and later moved to NZ from where I now post on a cricket forum. For the next few seasons he enhanced his reputation and, in 1833, accepted the challenge put forward by Tom Marsden of Sheffield, to play any man in England at single wicket. The first match was played at Norwich, on July 18. Pilch won convincingly by an innings and 70 runs dismissing Marsden for 7 and 0 and scoring 77 himself. The return match was played at Sheffield on August 5, 6, and 7, and again Pilch was successful scoring 82 and 106 against Marsden's 26 and 35. Over 20,000 people attended.
I still astounded you don't like Sanga - one my favourite players ever.I'm still astounded that he's called Fuller Pilch and not Fuller Pitch.
@Red_Ink_Squid knows why thoughI still astounded you don't like Sanga - one my favourite players ever.
I don't know why you like him so much.I still astounded you don't like Sanga - one my favourite players ever.
Genuinely thought you were talking about Fuller Pilch there at first.I don't know why you like him so much.
He's a complete **** and not even a very good player. Surely there are other players more worthy of your admiration.
I'm not supposed to share for legal reasons. ...but it's probably fine to post it in the thread everyone is ignoring as that's not really a public space.@Red_Ink_Squid knows why though
