What's also needed is anyone other than Australia or England to win for the good of the game.

I feel like Australia is vulnerable and not really flying on all cylinders - especially with the ball - but the depth of talent they have is just ludicrous and means they're probably way in front. Can't imagine any other side sticks the likes of Ash Gardner and Talia McGrath down at 5 and 6.

McGrath is the real game changer. She is, imo, the 'X' factor in this tournament.

England were strong here last year but a lot of the batters that fired then have lost their form (in fairness partly due to the pressure of higher Aus totals to chase)

Also day/night final. In Christchurch. On April 3. Any bets on the temperature during the last overs?

Just a reminder that Thailand should be here. They were robbed by the ICC, the fact that they aren't playing in this WC is a massive massive injustice.

New Zealand and South Africa could cause an upset to make it into the finals, but yea hard to look past Aus and England for this. NZ especially have home turf advantage, hope they can make it count.

Do hope we see a larger Women's WC in the future. 8 teams is too small, and it's no longer a case of there literally not being enough teams.

South Africa, last year, and New Zealand, in the recently concluded series, have shown more aggression and mental strength than they usually do.

If both teams live up to their recent form the tournament would be more interesting and competitive.

Yes. Srilanka also a big miss. This could easily have been a ten team affair with SL and Thai/Zim added.

Thailand did beat Bangladesh in the qualifier. Even if we accept there should only be 8 teams (which I have some sympathy for given the gap to the top five) they should not have hand picked the sides they did.
Oh. So what happened? On what basis did bd get in ahead of Thailand?

They used ODI rankings, where Bangladesh are 6th, but on the basis of five official games. Thailand did not have ODI status and so could not qualify via those rankings.

(And the qualifier was abandoned midway through due to omicron)

Also I suspect if they had actually counted the qualifiers as ODIs then Bangladesh would have fallen outside.

Yeah their batting depth is scary. Sutherland also strikes a very clean ball and bowls good medium-fast seamers from what I've observed. She could be the perfect finisher in this side at 7

What's more galling is that all the game in the qualifiers were supposed to have ODI status. This was announced by the ICC way back in 2018, and was supposed to be the case for every World Cup Qualifying tournament. But a few days before this tournament the ICC reversed it's decision. There was also no mention by the ICC in any official communication at any point that if the qualifier were to be abandoned that the WODI rankings would be used. So they very quietly completely screwed Thailand over.

Thailand won more games than anyone else in the qualifier too, beating Bangladesh, USA and Zimbabwe, and were in fact the first team in the tournament to finish their group stage matches. This means we get these very farcical looking points tables:

Complete and utter nonsense by the ICC, and they deserves as much condemnation as they can for actively deciding against growing the game. Full Members going back on their commitments to serve their own interest and completely ignoring on field merit as and when it suits them. Revolting
