Said it before the series

Marnus is the logical replacement as he’s basically opening anyway

If not him then Mitch

I would honestly call up Maxwell before selecting Harris
Tbf IIRC haven't you been pencilling Maxwell in for best part of a decade? May be misremembering but know there is someone on here who is convinced he is basically a genius who just forgets he is any time he has to play properly.

Maxwell absolutely should have played more Tests. One of the most egregious victims of Langerism. The bloke makes a Test hundred in India and then for some bizarre reason gets pigeonholed as a slow track bully as a result, completely baffling.

He's played 100 FC games and averages sub-40 anyway, and it's not like he played in the Shield era of greentop menaces; pitches have often been quite flat in the Shield in the last few seasons. I don't think there's much to suggest he'll be anything more than a passable batsman at Test level - and the way he batted in India really was remarkably bad for the brief time he was at the crease. Looked like a genuine tailender and given the state of our tail that's no mean feat.
It’s a mental thing

He knows that he has a technical issue and has probably spent thousands of hours working on it but stress does funny things to people

The first innings dismissal at Nagpur was one of the worst I've seen from an Australian top order batsman. Nothing straight break on leg stump, he just plonks the front foot down way outside the line and misses the ball by six inches.

e: Nagpur, not Delhi. Though his dismissal at Delhi was pretty bad too

Been a long time since I advocated picking him

That ship sailed with he and Mitch on board

oh wait….

Pick him

Scoring ~30% of your runs in 7% of your innings isn't massive predictor of success albeit small sample size. He was is a great ball striker with a mediocre (especially by Aussie bat) standards FC record, possibly should have played more but also probably got picked when he didn't deserve it early. IIRC wasn't it a bit of a joke was picked over Haurtiz and Lyon in India?

Just criminal how his career has been handled and that includes white ball stuff

Some faces fit & others don’t

Nah you might be thinking of another era. Lyon was already a fixture when Maxwell scored that ton in 2017. It was really during the sandpaper-era bans where we were picking Aaron Finch as a Test opener that his non-selection really stank, at that point he was clearly in the top six best red ball batsmen in the country that were, you know, available for selection (and was doing really well for Victoria at the time iirc)

Maxwell averaged over 40 in fc at a time when few other candidates did

Wasn’t liked by Clarke or Langer so they shafted him

Can't think of a player who matches this, Hauritz and Lyon's career basically don't over-lap. Maxwell was def a bit of a joke, similar to Steve Smith, in his initial use in the test team and the round peg-square hole element of some of the selections, but it's an absolute crime that he was never given a shot in the team on home soil. horrendous stuff, particularly given some of the names that did get a go. and of course like some players, we reached a point where he barely ever got to play in the shield because he was playing white ball cricket for Aus and then got over-looked coz he wasn't scoring shield runs

only 10 of his FC games have taken place over the last 5 years

Yeah, I meant on his test debut he didn't really deserve selection on that first India tour. Although I guess Lyon for Maxwell isn't a particularly one for one.

Playing in India just breaks selectors brains as well, teams jam in dog**** spinners then get shocked when they get smoked instead of just playing their best bowlers + 1 being a spinner.

I mean he did help Australia win two world cups
Sure but counted for very little at the selection table

Aaron Finch has played nearly as many tests & the Australian selectors were just about the only people in the world who didn’t know that he wasn’t up to it
