Perfect game really. Perfect.
Seriously.

I've said lots of times before that the best ODIs are when the team batting first scores 275-300 and all three results are still possible going into the last over of a chase, and it's hard to imagine a game that fit that better than this one. But even beyond that we had all the different elements that you see in ODIs -- good swing bowling up front, yorkers at the death, collapses, recoveries, the tense middle overs battle between accurate bowling+good fielding and gap-finding+good running that's completely unique to ODIs, innings being built, cameos being blasted, innings pacing changes, captains facing team balance issues with the bowling attack, good catches and a really tense finish. I think the only thing we missed at all was some top quality spin bowling, although even on that front Rashid and Prasanna did really well at the roles they were given.

To me that's why ODIs can be so good sometimes. Tests will always be my favourite format but there were so many things we got from that game that we couldn't really get from either Tests or T20s, particularly not together in the same game.

Most of us know that Woakes has never really done anything with the bat in domestic one day cricket, partly because Warwickshire have always had a lot of allrounders so he bats pretty low, but I'm somewhat surprised that that was his first List A fifty.

Yesterday I got up at 4.30am to watch the football.......this morning I got up at the same time to catch the end of the cricket.

Moral of this story......England football is shite and cricket is ****ing awesome.

Chris Woakes WAFG!!!

Wow what a match..we should have had it in the bag but fair play to England who deserved the tie by never giving up. Buttler and woakes were superb and both deserved tons for the way they played. I am not trying to make excuses but we really missed Angelo in the bowling at the end (he bowled very tightly at first) but fair play to both teams to come back from early wickets and score a decent score..glad we were competitive and bring on the second game...

Yeah, he generally batted 8 and most of his List A is 40 over cricket. He lacks the boundary hitting ability to be a really top class white ball player to be honest, but playing the role he did today is perfect for. His bowling is coming on nicely as well. Bowls in the PP and at the death.

Yeah, he will get dumped straight out for Stokes however if they both play 10 ODIs I'd back Woakes to be better in 7 of them.

Incidentally, a last-ball six to tie has happened twice before, the first way back in 92-93 by Pakistan against Australia and the second in 2013 by Netherlands against Ireland.
