Yes, but having said that, his scores in Bangladesh weren't bad (and the Bangladeshi bowlers aren't that bad, it's their batting that makes Bangladesh a subpar side). This shows that while he might have a weakness, he still works hard and his efforts are rewarded. Everyone has a weakness - it's those that actually manage to score runs when facing their weakness that actually prove themselves as capable players. Bangladesh was a spinners' dream during that tour and Marshall's scores were respectable, particularly in comparison with the rest of the team.anzac said:

went and watched new zealand play victoria 2nd XI today. few interesting points.
-at least one third of cairns's deliveries were slower balls. whether he is working on a new one, or is worried about the consistency of his current one (many of them were not good balls)
-mills and adams opened the bowling - possibly being put against each other to see who would earn a spot?
-butler got slapped a fair bit, didn't hold a length very well
-good to see the damien martyn field being reemployed. butler to aiden blizzard, had four players between backward point and coverpoint
-styris dropped a soda at slip, and didnt bowl all that well. made a quickfire 40
-very few batsman were actually dismissed, most retired, and one of the wickets was a brilliant run out.

-it was a 3rd XI vic team, and they still got within 35 runs, even though NZ weren't all that keyed up

look so far as Marshall goes I think I was one of the first to raise his name for the Test squad.................and I think I made a post regarding his BAN innings that acknowledged his effort in not throwing his wicket away & managing to post a 50+ when appearing so out of sorts at the crease..........
all I'm doing now is trying to look at it how I think the selectors are going to go with him..........I feel they have done an about face on him for the reasons I have given, otherwise I can find no reason as to why they did not start him ahead of Macca - a case of cold feet.....................

Waiting for an e-mail reply a few weeks back, I killed the time by going through Marshall's provincial scorecards back to about 2000. The thing that struck me was how often he was getting out to domestic spinners. In the BCs I've often seen him pop up soft catches (often to cover, point or midwicket) in situations where he has little pace to work with and gets through his shots too early. In some ways it's no surprise Marshall is averaging 26 in NZ domestic cricket - slow-to-medium bowlers, slow or seaming pitches...none of it is particularly good for a deflector of the ball.
I'm going to be interested to see how he plays Warne and the Sri Lankans this summer. He's about to get a decent crack in the OD side, so hopefully he's been watching the way say McCullum creates his own pace with quick feet against slower bowlers.

Warne has retired from ODI's so he won't be playing warne unless he plays in the tests against aussie which would be a disgrace to NZ cricket if they selected someone who has never made a first class hundred when there are people like Fulton and Macintosh who have.Kent said:
I totally agree, what does it say to a guy like Fulton or McIntosh who consistently score big runs (big hundreds too) at first-class level. Even his brother James would be a little miffed! As far as Marshall goes I've noticed he does struggle a bit without pace to work with. Against Shoaib on flat wickets in Pakistan he looked great and scored a lot of runs. Against Bangladesh he didn't look confident and got out playing too early a few times. He scores well on the off-side but he seems to really struggle nudging the ball on the leg-side, he often ends of looping a catch to short midwicket.
I think this ODI series coming up will be quite important for him and if he does well we could see him a lot more this summer (since he only has performed in ODIs so far, how else do you judge him?).

where was this ? he doesn't bowl off-spin, infact he was ND's 6th bowler last year and he bowls slow-mediums.nzidol said:
i made this point a while ago, instead of picking people who you think have what it takes but don't perform at domestic level, pick the players who perform consistently at domestic level, i made this point a while ago while saying mark gillespie should of been in NZ 'A' instead of sherlock, butler is another example.
he was playing for a oneday side against one of our oneday teams at cornwall last saturday. he definitly bowled offspin, maybe just for a laugh. im supporting sherlers 100%, i used to open the bowling with him for waimea college 1st XI and Nelson U-15/U-17 before I moved to Auckland. He was always quick but I hope hes put on a few kilos because his main problem even then, was his frail body (typical kiwi quick). He used to have a really good action, really good follow through.

i wasnt playing in that game. i play for our 2nd team(1st grade) and our 3rd team(3rd grade) at the club. i didn't get a mention this week, we got hammered by takapuna. they didn't have their stars so it was an embarrassing innings loss, even without lou vincent or andre adams. still they had paul hitchcock whos a good bat.bryce said:

I enjoy playing 1st grade so much more because we have proper umpires and i can get lbws. im pretty gutted not to get more games in 1st grade this year, my stats in 1st grade this year 6-71 off 19 overs and 24 runs for 0 outs. And then.. dropped. I been working on my batting too, got a 50 few weeks back and averaging 32 for the year (duck on sat unfortunately). The worst thing about akl is the crap pitches, I used to be able to bend my back in nelson but these pudding pitches barely bounce stump high, so crap. how are the pitches in hamiltron?bryce said:

i bowl medium-fast and open the bowling but i've had a knee injury for a few weeks so i've been playing as a specialist batsman and hit 50* for the 2nd grade team a couple of weeks ago, but i have not done much bowling at all this year, i'm averaging 53.00 with the bat this year- 1*, 2*, 50* and a duck lol.nzidol said:
