I think its correct that most people here haven't put Kallis on their lists. I like Kallis and think he's the most technically beautiful batsman in the world. His innings against England in 2004/05 were some of the most graceful batting I've seen in the past few years. Howvever, in ODI's I think he's far less great. So many times I've seen South Africa needing to push on, yet Kallis remains himself and stays tentative.
If I had to compare him to somebody it would be Simon Katich. Somebody who can make runs, but can be a hindrance to his team since he doesn't score enough. The main times guys like that are great in their teams are when their team is in trouble and they need a somebody solid making runs.
I am, however, shocked that so few people are listing the great Murali! Granted against Australia he's had his problems, but he's such a great thinker when it comes to cutting off runs.
I think the names that are just plain obvious are...
MS Dhoni
The most entertaining player from India right now. Great entertainer and can make great runs. This has nothing to do with how he's done against England, but I have a feeling if he performs well at the world cup, India are in with a shot. Again, nothing to do with England, but I think India are a real go at the world cup. Perhaps not as obvious as some might think, especially with Sangakara. But on batting alone he should be in there. I liked the lad who put Sangakara and Dhoni on the same team. Good thinking that since Dhoni can really suck behind the stumps.
Kevin Pietersen
You can say what you want about Pietersen in test matches, and a lot of it may be true, but in the ODI arena he's amazing. He's more likely to make overs 50 runs than make less than that. Has no fear which is a great quality and actually reads one-day situations quite nicely. Just one of those people who seem to understand one-dayers better than tests.
Andrew Flintoff
There's just too much I could say about him. What a top bloke! Do I really need to explain why he's so obvious.
Muttiah Muralitharan
Where's the Murali love? He's a legend.
Shaun Pollock
He's a legend too. People here cream over Kallis, and I understand why. But Pollock is the better great. If you had to pick one player from SA currently to play for your team, it would be him. Bowled without luck against Australia if you ask me. Got the ball to seam a lot too, jagging all areas etc. His batting is golden as well. Genuine all-rounder and really you just can't have enough of them in ODI's.
There were a few guys who were near certain picks... but really that slightest doubt against them eliminated them from my mind, so don't get too sensitive. If you were to include Australia in there then Ponting, Symonds, Hussey and maybe Lee would be in there. Lee rocked last year, but was terrible in South Africa.
