Thankfully Bell won't even be in the same country as Prior come the second test due to paternity leave, and probably shouldn't be picked for the remainder of the series as today's failure is hardly a one-off. Bairstow should have a run in the side instead of Bell, who is has contributed absolutely nothing to the side this year and seems as mentally shot as ever when there's a serious challenge.

Disappointing to read the occasional excuse that this is OK because they aren't used to the conditions. Someone really should explain that to the guys who won in Pakistan and Sri Lanka 12 years ago after we hadn't played in Asia for ages. Against hacks like Saqlain and Murali. Difference was, of course, that they had a game plan.

And on other matters, the idea that Panesar would have contributed less with the ball than our third seamer looks even more ridiculous today than it has done previously. Coaches and captains are supposed to be able to read the conditions before the match aren't they?

One wonders what our batting coach is getting paid for as he hasn't seemed to make any difference at all. Then again i'll be shot down now as you can never ever criticise Gooch.
