He was awful last year an hasn't been much better this summer. 6th or 7th in the spin pecking order at best. Pretty lucky to be playing Shield cricket really.

yeah this.

fairly typical squad from these selectors eg it's totally different from anything anyone expected. instead of the spin cycle, we have the fringe cycle. get picked for an aus a team or an ODI or named as a promising player or whatever, get chucked out within months. i suppose it's better

Hmm, interesting lineup. First thoughts is that Joe Burns is so unlucky.

Its slightly weird that 3 openers are playing. The team is going to have an awesome tail with McDonald, Hastings and Coulter-Nile to bat incredibly at 9,10 and 11.

EDIT - With McDonald captain, he might bat higher, but you can't really play Henriques or Maxwell down at 9.
Henriques and Maxwell should definitely be eight and nine in that lineup. They seem to have been picked primarily as bowlers anyway, for whatever reason.

It's like they are trying to shield our real 2nd XI (guys like Ferguson, Cutting, Starc, Bird etc) from the view of the South Africans in case they are required during the series. Also surprised Johnson missed

I think they've generally avoided picking NSW and QLD players due to the SS match being played simultaneously at the Gabba. Probably thinking that it's more productive to have them play there then at the road that is Allan Border Field. The players that have been selected(Smith and Henriques) are not potentially guaranteed a place in a full strength NSW side with Clarke, Watson and Haddin around and so this way are sure to get some game time.

I'd say they've chosen Hughes not necessarily on form but on the thought that he's got nothing to prove at First Class level and more to see how he fares against an international bowling attack with his rejigged batting style.

Other than that some of the selections seem a bit random. Could be that they want a long batting line up to try to wear down the South African pacers ahead of the test series.

Nah Smith and Henriques are nailed in that team.
True but given the recent article about how the Australian selectors are more open with the domestic sides it could be that they've basically said we want to make sure Watto, Maddinson, Clarke, Haddin, Nev etc get game time so we'll give Smith and Henriques the "A" game and the rest get a game at the Gabba.

weird side, but it looks like they don't want to pick any guys that might play the test series, a bit of foxing. The rest look like guys they want to try or re-try at International.

It is joke that NSW lose two players, but Queensland lose no one. At least they could have pick an even number of players from each team.

Looks like you'll fit in well here. :p

Seriously though, welcome to the forum! We've seen a few blokes who know their Australian domestic cricket and can articulate a point join up in the last couple of seasons now; I'm loving it.

Looking at the Australia A side, reckon their is real case for Paine batting at 11. Only NCN has batted worse this season, but he has a higher score.
